It was an event of orgasmic proportions when....

Recommended Posts

I beat Adventure on level 3. I never could do it. Level one was too easy, and level 3 was just out of reach. This is a really great game. The simple complexity of it just astounds me at how great it is. this is my favorite atari game. ps, does anyone actually play the second level? Ive never see anyone play that. Its not as fun. I hate when the bat just comes and takes your sword right away.

Congrats!

Now you need to get the Easter Egg and play with the DIFF on A.

I played Game 2 exactly once, just to see what it was about. It was pretty easy and boring, so I proceeded on to 3 and have played that ever since. :)

Actually, I often play on Game 2... I find that finishing Game 3 relies far too much on luck. If you manage to get lucky with all the items in "good" spots, then you're set, and you can make an easy win. If you're unlucky, you could end up with a combination of items/locations that are essentially impossible (I remember one time there were two dragons right outside the castle. That was fun.)

Basically, as long as you reset often enough, you'll get the sword very quickly and kill the dragons. Once they're gone, you're on easy street.

I guess I play games for different reasons. I liked being chased by the dragons (ducks). I tried not to kill them until I absolutely had to. If more dragons eventually showed up after you kill the first ones, I would have been stabbing dragons like crazy because they are fun to kill.

From the first time I got Adventure, I only played on Level 3 because I hate it when things are in the same place every time. I just wish that Warren Robinett was more careful:

I used the random object placement in level 3 for variety. I didn't want it to be like a puzzle, where once you've solved it, it's not very interesting to do it again, and I wanted to avoid that. The bat was also added as a confusion factor, to move objects around a bit, so that the game wasn't too predictable. (I did make a mistake in my random object placement code, and there is a 1 in 18 chance that the yellow key will start out in the yellow castle, making the game unwinnable. This only happens in level 3.)

As you may gather from the above, I think that randomness in a game is very strong medicine, and must be very carefully controlled.

Adventure is one of the reasons I bought the 2600 as a kid, I have always loved playing it and it will always be on my top 10 list of all time favorite games.

The first time I played Adventure was when we were visiting relatives out of state. The game was brand new at the time. I couldn't belive how amazingly cool it was. I pestered my parents relentlessly until I got my own copy (sorry mom & dad). To this day it remains my very favorite VCS game and one of my favorite games of all time on any system.

I've long suspected that sometimes the yellow key would start out inside the yellow castle.

Thats interesting about the gold key starting in the gold castle. I don't recall ever seeing this happen. But then again, I've had the game since it came out, so maybe it had happened a couple of times, but I would think that I would remember that I couldn't win!
