Maybe we rebirth the Atari 2600 joystick and there's a most in every game, or most games, that supports just the fire button and eight-way pad. It's good to see an emphasis on simplicity of controls as a factor to enhance the quality of gameplay, especially in multiplayer games where it would be nice to have a friend just start playing... Easier control setups certainly make it easier to start playing sight unseen, say, Project Gotham vs Halo... Any thoughts?

Cootster #3 Posted April 20, 2004 Sad, yet true . . . This would completely and totally rock, especially if it involved a separate classic digital controller, but it would also be the means by which MS whacks Nintendo and Sony . . . And the fact that basically every game genre imaginable has been done either on the 2600 or using one-button Atari compy/C64 sticks . . . I say it's more than possible. Raijin Z #6 Posted April 20, 2004 More like MS taking a page out of Apple's book. One button to rule them all.
Paralistalon #7 Posted April 20, 2004 Sounds like Microsoft is taking a page out of Nintendo's book... --Zero How so? That's what I thought too. It's because the GameCube controller has one "main button" that's bigger than the rest and located at the center, and it's generaly the primary action button used in games. Ze_ro #8 Posted April 20, 2004 Nintendo has been talking for a while now about simplifying video games, and the Gamecube controller is somewhat built around this idea... try playing Kirby's Air Ride... it only uses one button! --Zero
Vic George 2K3 #9 Posted April 21, 2004 I'm not sure super-stripping the controls would accomplish anything unless the games themselves change. Then again, I don't think adding any further buttons, dials, sticks, and doodads to existing controllers is the way to go, either. I like the Playstation 2 Dual Shock controller and I'd rather not see that change.
rc #10 Posted April 21, 2004 The Gamecube has some great party games that have very simple controls: WarioWare Mario Party 4 and 5 Pac-Man Vs.
