NES repair help

Recommended Posts

I replaced my 72 pin connector a couple weeks ago, and some of the games worked fine. however, ive noticed some games dont work unless i hold the game down inside, then they work fine. apparently its not going down far enough? if anyone has had this problem and knows what i did wrong re-assembling it let me know.

(my post about my marble madness game turned out to be this problem, the game does work if i hold it down inside the system then turn it on)

thanx

Sometimes I find that the pins on the games are on an angle that prevents them from touching the connectors properly. You can put them through a GameGenie to get them to work or shove some folded cardboard into the bottom of the cart and 'bend' the board to change the angle of the pins a bit

If what you meant was pushing the tray lower than what it usually goes, then you definitely should clean both the game and the 72-pin connector (even if its new). I know it sucks, but NES units were never very reliable in this regard.

when i say holding it down all the way, i mean pushing the cart and holding it down just below where it would be after it clicks, and comes back up and catches....i hope that makes sense...im having a heckuva time getting this to work

When you replaced the pin connector did you make sure the tray was "snapped" properly into place. Sometime this is a little tricky.

If you still have the original connector, lightly sand the contacts with 1000 grain sandpaper and thoroughly clean all the contact points with rubbing alcohol. Be careful not to over sand the contacts or they will not work properly. *New* 72 pin connectors are very hit or miss depending on where you get them from.

I agree with what gamerz said. It's very tricky to get the cartridge mechanism back into place after you replace the 72 pin connector. The plastic contact pionts should EASILY rest on the main circuit board. Sometimes they float a millimeter or two abobe the circuit board and are then pushed down when the mechanism is screwed in -- the NES won't work correctly under these circumstances. You need to fiddle and shift the mechanism until it no longer feels like something is holding it back.

Hope this is clear and helps.
