Ze_ro #3 Posted April 29, 2004 I'll hold off opinion until I see a list of games. The best games the C64 had were generally all fairly large disk-based games from a pretty wide variety of publishers, which would be incredibly difficult to include in such a device. Epyx's "_____Games" series was good, but without games like Wasteland, Space Taxi, Ultima IV, Elite, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and so on, it's missing a lot. --Zero
Adrian M #4 Posted April 29, 2004 This might be worth it just so I can skip those painful load times of my C64 Yes, I remember those days! Even with a FastLoader cart, some C64 disk games (and utilities) would literally take up to five minutes to load! The D&D games come to mind...
joeybastard #5 Posted April 29, 2004 Remember? I'm still living them! I play my C64 a lot but I usually step outside to smoke while Space Taxi loads
Zaxxon #6 Posted April 29, 2004 I am not so "a mazed". It'll probably just end up being another NES-on-a-chip device with the games reprogrammed to run on it ala the INTV 25 in 1. All the C64 fans will complain about it when it comes out because the sound will be off or music will be missing etc.
Adrian M #7 Posted April 29, 2004 Remember? I'm still living them! I play my C64 a lot but I usually step outside to smoke while Space Taxi loads Hehe! How have your disk drive(s) been holding up?
joeybastard #8 Posted April 29, 2004 No problem with the drive at all. I do have a spare tucked away that appears to be brand new since the box is still sealed. The floppies are doing fine also. Chriss++ actually hooked me up with the disks.
Adrian M #9 Posted April 29, 2004 No problem with the drive at all. I do have a spare tucked away that appears to be brand new since the box is still sealed. The floppies are doing fine also. Chriss++ actually hooked me up with the disks. I see. My drive in particular has had issues where the "disk knocking" has thrown the drive belt out of alignment on several occassions. It happened again and I have not used my C64 since. It's a pain to open and adjust.
joeybastard #10 Posted April 29, 2004 That's a shame about the drive. The C64 is a definite guilty pleasure for me, I could never afford one as a kid but played it at my friends constantly. Now I have 2 of them and really enjoy it.
SteveW #11 Posted April 29, 2004 If you have a Tapwave Zodiac handheld, you could always go for one of their EPYX C=64 compilations. I like the thought of having Temple of Asphai and Impossible Mission in my pocket wherever I go. Now, if I could just get my hands on a Tapwave to try out first before buying one....... Susuwatari #12 Posted April 29, 2004 Some of my fav C64 were quite large (Ultima 5 for example, 4 disks, both sided) and it would be rather difficult to make it work on carts. Despite the frequent uses, I have had only 2 failed disk out of maybe 500 disks for C64 and aside from 1541's going out of alignment I rarely had trouble. For some reason, half of the 3.5" 1.44MB disks I've had in the past decade has completely failed (completely unreadable) and some of the remaining 3.5" disks are failing. Why is the low density 5.25" still useable without problem for more than 20 yers but 3.5" disks can't last more than a few years? I think I'll see if any of those companies would honor their lifetime warramty on those 3.5" disks as seeing some of them aren' making 3.5" disks anymore
Ze_ro #13 Posted April 29, 2004 Why is the low density 5.25" still useable without problem for more than 20 yers but 3.5" disks can't last more than a few years? I've noticed the same problem... I have stacks and stacks of C-64 and Amiga disks... and for whatever reason, the Amiga disks seem to be much more prone to failures. --Zero
+davidcalgary29 #14 Posted April 29, 2004 ...whereas I have found very few failures amongst my many aging and decaying 3.5" ST floppies. Perhaps the Amiga drive mechanism is very sensitive to read/write errors?
BigFairy321 #15 Posted April 29, 2004 the only reason im not getting a c64 for my collection is the worry of reliablity issues. i would love to have one as i used to own one with about 200+ disks in the late 80's and early 90's.....
Saikyo #16 Posted May 8, 2004 Man Epyx's ______Games series was trash! and if it only has one controller then how are you even supposed to play the game properly? Looks like it's gonna hit rock bottom as soon as it comes out! only a built in tape loader could save that! Unless of course there is two controllers............... Looks like it's gonna hit rock bottom as soon as it comes out! only a built in tape loader could save that! Unless of course there is two controllers............... I agree with the Epyx' games series were renowned as the best of their type by miles. As for two players, all games had an option to play using one joystick, so you could pass it around, with the best score/time winning the medal. So there really shouldn't be any problems if those games are included.
Raijin Z #19 Posted May 8, 2004 This is really an abomination. I'd rather see a rereleased original C64 than this abbreviation of the thing.
Saikyo #20 Posted May 8, 2004 I forgot that all players only use one joystick for those games! Any way Its still bad like Raijin said Id rather find myself another C64 and loads of classic games that I want to play at a car boot sale that buy that! Maybe ill change my mind when I see the list of games in full but I doubt it! It seems like it's all going to be sports games, something that isn't performed very well on the C64 at all! Yeah, I would as well, but still, these are going to come out for nearly every retro format there is so we'll see how it goes. There are loads of great C64 games they could choose from, I suppose it depends how easy it is to get the licenses for them as to which they use. It would be nice if Paradroid, Uridium and Impossible Mission were on there for starters....
cimerians #22 Posted May 9, 2004 My C64 games vote goes for: Beach Head Raid Over Moscow Space Taxi Commando (remember the cool music?) Bruce Lee and Oils Well!!
Ze_ro #23 Posted May 9, 2004 I really hope they don't skimp on the hardware by putting in watered down versions of the SID and VIC-II chips... One of the things that the C-64 was (and still is) known for was it's quality sound chip. --Zero
Saikyo #24 Posted May 9, 2004 Im hoping these games are included Uridium Bangkok Knights Flimbo's Quest Klax Manic Miner Ancipital Arnie Gauntlet 2 Midnight Resistance Night Breed Bug Blaster Arkanoid Rod-Land Mr. Do and Advanced Skateboard Simulator (One of the best sports games on the C64) And yeah let's hope the sound chip isn't a stupid replacement.
