Coleco ADAM - Donkey Kong

Recommended Posts

A couple of issues/questions - hoping someone or some persons may be able to answer or and assist. Recently, I have taking an interest in Coleco ADAM emulation. My understanding, for the longest time is that essenitally all Coleco ADAM released games that already released on the ColecoVision were the same game. Recently, I realized that is wrong. I am the owner of a ColecoVision now and back in the mid-80's. Never owned nor knew anyone who owned the Adam Computer back during its initially release.

Furthermore, the labelling of certain ColecoVision ROMS by individuals as well as the "GOOD" Tools stating that it is the Adam version - when it is *not*. The fact is the same exact game and gameplay help solidify that assumption when you load the ROM. Donkey Kong being an excellent example of this. There are two commonly found ROM versions of the Donkey Kong game for the ColecoVision (Okay now three with 'Super DK!'). The 16k version of Donkey Kong ROM is often labelled as the 'official' ColecoVision version. However, a 24k ROM image is also availabe that is labelled as the 'ADAM' version. This I found is incorrect.

Recently, came across the following deduction of games/ROMS for the ColecoVision & ADAM systems.

1. Donkey Kong 16k version - "Typically known as the ColecoVision version". This ROM is avilable freely and widely available.

2. Donkey Kong 24k version - "Often labelled as the 'ADAM' version" - Which it is *not*, It is *exactly* the same as the 16k version. There is no difference in graphics/sound/animation or gameplay.

3. Super DK! - Often labelled as a prototype. This is not true. "Super Donkey Kong for ColecoVision is a hacked version of the enhanced game made for Coleco's Adam computer. Because of what was likely a means of cost-cutting by Coleco, the version of Donkey Kong they "gave away" with the system was scaled down to fit in about half as much memory as the ColecoVision can handle". See this site for all the details: http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/superdonkeykong.htm

This version as well is freely and widely available.

4. SuperGame - Donkey Kong for the ADAM computer. This is the version of Donkey Kong complete with all four screens and all animations. It appears to be unavaliable and is not a part of either the "GOOD" sets or the TOSEC sets. I am presuming there is a disk version available. Although I have not seen it. There is a DDP/tape version, as can be seen here:

http://coleco.freeservers.com/proddes.htm

The fourth listing appears to be unavailabe anywhere as a digital image perserved for emulation. I cannot locate it. Does anyone know where or how a DDP image can be obtained of version 4, or even better a disk image? Again, it is unavailable and not a part of any recent 'GOOD' or 'TOSEC' sets.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies,

Trebor

The last version is WELL worth seeking out and finding.

Also, I plan (this time) of having my ADAM on display at the Video Game Summit this June, so if anyone comes by, I'll trade a disk copy of DK, with the disk version of some protos I have...

The Super DK! version could be classified as a prototype. AFAIK it came from Coleco and isn't some hack done by a user group. Did Coleco have any intentions of releasing this version? We'll never know. I read that Coleco demoed a cart version of Dragon's Lair. That would have to of been a huge(for the time) cart.

I haven't been able to find a .dsk file version of ADAM Super DK online either. It's not the only game I can't find. Some others are online but are badly corrupted. There's still some games that have never been converted apparently. I don't believe Coleco ever got around to releasing DK on disk. I've seen boxed versions of the DDP game. Remember this game was quickly yanked from stores soon after it was released after Nintendo threatened to sue. The disk version eColeco sells must be the DDP version converted to disk use. There is a program out there for the PC, to load ADAM games into the pc and convert them to .dsk format. I have it on my pc somewhere. You must need a 5 1/4" floppy drive connected to your PC. I guess the only way you're going to get a .dsk version to use on an emu is to convert it yourself. Or Shortly could convert it for us and then email it to us. How about it Shortly? I was a CV and later an ADAM owner back then and now.
