I get sound, but no picture...

I was picking my kid up at a friends house and I saw in the neighbors garage an arcade cabinet. Not one to pass things by I stopped by and sure enough, he was looking to sell it. It's a Marvel Super Heroes and he said "there are other games that plug into it". One was Vampire Slayer and a "few more". He said he paid $600 for it, but was moving and needed to get rid of it (wife).

 

Here's the problem, he said when he bought it that it worked fine, but now after moving it around his garage, it powers up but there's no picture. He did say there was sound. He seems to think it's "wiring" gone bad. I'm not sure.

 

I asked him what he was looking to get for it and he recommended that I get someone who knows how to repair these and whatever the difference and that would be the price.

 

I'm thinking about offering $200 and if I can't fix it just turn it into a MAME cabinet. I'm not afraid of paying the $600, if I know the machine will work.

 

Any ideas?

I'm sure the more technical people will tell you the exact problem, but if worst comes to worst, you can just get a new monitor for it. I dont think they are that costly. Plus, thats a cool cab to have anyways

Check the fuse on the monitor chassis, check for loose connections. See if the monitor is getting 120 VAC. If it's getting voltage try a cap kit.

Before poking about! Beware that the monitor gives out a deadly dose of voltage. Be aware. Then get a chart for the game, check all cables. Most prob video-gnd is not connected properly. However it could be any other thing too.

I'm so freakin' excited, going to pick it up after work. It needs some work, but I'm confident that I can get it to turn out nice.

 

by the way, I need to remold the black molding, I saw that I can get about 35 feet of it for 10 bucks on ebay. Is that reasonable? Also, anyone know of a place where to get supplies? I have a manufacturer of plexi-glass(acrylic) from business so I'm okay there.

This is one of the 6 games that came with the cabinet. I honestly can say I've never heard of this game. Pretty funky looking

Sounds like best case scenario, there's a fuse or a wire loose, which will cost you a buck or so. Worst case, the monitor is busted, which could cost up to a couple of hundred, depending on the monitor size.

 

Even if you turn it into a MAME cabinet you may want to repair the monitor. I personally have a 21" computer monitor in mine, but a lot of people feel that PC monitors are too "clear" and prefer the feel of a real arcade monitor. Up to you.

 

$600 is way too high for a broken JAMMA game, I hope you got a better deal than that. I have 16 cabinets now and haven't paid more than $200 for any of them.

Well it turns out I paid $300 "as is"

 

I got the cabinet unloaded at work last Friday. I put the Marvel board onto the main board and plugged it in and the monitor came on, but no game. I pressed the board further onto the main board and it fired up fine

 

After about 20 minutes it shut off for about 30 seconds then came back on. It kept doing this on and off. I thought perhaps that it might be over heating when I noticed that the exhaust fan wasn't spinning. I found a female plug dangling down and plugged it into the fan and on it went. It works great now

 

I tested each board and they all work fine. I kind of feel guilty now taking it for 300 bucks. It's such a sweet machine though.. just needs some minor cosmetic stuff

Congratulations on the sweet score! Often times these old games aren't working for reasons as simple as that. I bought a non-working game once, and when I got it home I replaced two fuses (five for a dollar) and it's been running ever since.
