Would you like to see new games for the ST ?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I think, like most of you, nearly my whole youth was about spending hours and days, in the dark, in front of my Atari ST.

Back then, I created many games but never tried to publish them, I just gave them away to my friends. I decided, few years ago, to make them available for download, for free. But I would need to translate them in English first, as I am french... and write documentations and so on...

Before doing so, as it is a lot of work, I would like to know if some of you think is worth it. You will find pictures and reviews on my web site at:

http://www.geocities.com/lkermel

Go to Art'moon, then programming and video games. The first ones I will make available are probably Wiliness and Bold...

what do you think ?...

Ya, Wow!

Those games look slick.  I would buy Bold, love shoot'em-ups.

If I release them, they'll be free to download you know :)

My friends always told me I should be selling them. But I just want people to play them, that's why I will never sell them (except if producing them cost me money).

I love shooters too and Bold was one of my last attempt to create a shoot'em up for the Atari ST... it is, I think, really playable and I have a version will all levels working. If enought people are interested, it will be the first one I release :)

Keep in mind I wrote all those games 12 or 15 years ago (my god... I'm getting so old...) so I will need to go back into the code and compile them again. But that shouldn't be a big deal :)

Yes those games look stunning to say the least. I'd be extremely interested in downloading these games or even purchasing them. I hope you translate them to english.

Outstanding work. You are one talented person.

Wow, I always feel a bit sceptical when unfinished games are unearthed, but these look absolutely brilliant! Some excellent graphics and ideas there. I'd love to see any of these games finished. :)

Slug looks really good - I like the fact that the levels vary from top down view to side scrolling. In fact, I made a Quartet song years ago for a game me and my friend were making, called Slugs, but we never finished it. You can use it for the title music if you like! It's here: http://www.geocities.com/junosix2/ :D

Indeed those productions looks marvelous!

The games you developped require so much graphics, strange that you never made those public before. ;)

The graphics are up to the best ST commercial prods imo (i'd even say that it reaches the level of E.S. for Wiliness and Bold ;)).

Also your hand-drawings, hi-res graphics and 3D graphics are great.

No surprise you now work for Dreamworks, but quite a surprise you still take time for ST stuff and videogame collecting when having such a time-taking job (i suppose :P).

Bold seems to have a similar gameplay to SideArms on PC Engine btw, which would be pretty cool. :)

Slug is a pacman+plateformer game?

Which language have you used to code those prods?

Hi,

First of all, thanks for your replies and feedbacks.

> Do you know some silly coders still release games for ST ?

I know and I am not surprised. Sometimes I miss the time when people will push hardware to the limit, and machines like the Atari ST or Amiga are really rich and I am sure, even today, it is possible to find new tricks. Nowadays, we all program in C and there is no point of writing something that will push your graphic card to the limit, the next generation of hardware will just wipe it off. But on another hand, this is for me a good thing as I always prefered the artistic side of a game, more than the programing side :)

> I only signed up to this forum in order to let you know that I'll gladly translate these beauties for you

thanks a lot :)

But I am living in Califonia now and I have many friends around who will be able to give me a hand if needed , or at least to correct my spelling mistakes ;)

>Bold seems to have a similar gameplay to SideArms on PC Engine btw, which would be pretty cool

Thanks DMA for your fantastic reply :)

I always loved Side Arms and god knows how much money I spent in the arcades. Bold is inspired from Side Arms as I always loved the 'robot transformer' aspect in a shooter, except that you can actually transform into a jet-fighter in Bold :)

Bold will be the first one released as it doesn't need much translation, just need to fix a couple of things in the code and then compile it. But you are right, I don't have much free time but all of this is worth it... I hope...

I also started to write a 2D shooter using DirectX, but never had time to finish it. But the first level is playable, may post it one day, or a least some pictures...

thanks you all for your support !!! I am now really motivated and I hope you will like them as graphics are far from being the only ingredients that make a great games, gameplay is.

Well... before ST and AMIGA arrived, there was a machine called the "ATARI 8-Bit computer" . Until today the machine is discovered at about 40% of its capabilities. So be shure that I still miss that "pushing the HW to the limits" until today.... overall...

Don't be sad, you have already participated you know. Without this thread and all your replies I may have never released those games. I am so motivated now ! this is so exiting to know that my games are gonna be played again, 15 years later !

> BOLD looks cool. Can't wait!

he he ... don't get over excited guys as you may be really disappointed if the game is just average. I'll do my best to get them to you as soon as possible.

> Ah - one can see the atari legends guys are interested in this thread...

I must say that I was really impressed by atari legends ! great job and an amazing source of information and games, and a great community too !

If you like my games, I will be more than happy to give you copies to add to your game list :)

take care and I'll keep you posted. Bold will be the first one, I don't know how long it will take as I am kind of busy at work at the moment. But I will do my best !

thanks !

My god these screens look so pro! Why did you not release those, you could have made quite a buck with them, I think!

Anyway, yes, we are very interested in those games. Please, also join www.atari-forum.com and let all the other ST maniacs know about these new games.

It would be so cool to have some new pro games for our fav system! especially shooters like BOLD! I already cannot wait to play this thing myself!

Thanks for the great news ... Let's hope we will hear from you soon!

Cheers,

Whoa!! Dude!! those graphics are some of the best I have seen on an ST! :D

BOLD and the Wiliness saga looks awesome and im also interested in playing Dragoon Twins and Slug! ;)

As soon as these get released im getting them copied to floppies so I can play

them in my REAL ST! ;)

BTW: I know that they are still in french, but could you release them anyway before

you translate so that we can at least play them?

Some people are not really bothered what language they are in! ;) {HINT HINT}

Any good luck with the translation! and I'm looking forward to playing these games!

PS Is Dragoon Twins like Bubble Bobble? the screen layout reminds me of it! 8)

I have to agree with that -why not release them in french? Many people do speak french -and, in any case, it doesn't really matter in a shooter, does it?

Hi

Translation doesn't really affect Bold, you are right. I am sure it will be really playable even if sound effects are in french ;)

Bold just need a bit or cleaning, I'm just collecting all the right files on one disk (they are spread over 5 or 6 at the moment) and I'm fixing a couple of things. But they are minor, I started last night and I don't think it will take too long.

Then I'll do the same for Wiliness but release the french version first :)

>As soon as these get released im getting them copied to floppies so I can >play them in my REAL ST!

Some of them, like Wiliness, need 1 meg of Ram though...

> Is Dragoon Twins like Bubble Bobble? the screen layout reminds me of it!

It is. The only bad point in Dragoon Twins is the game play. If I could spend a bit more time on it I could fix some really bad control issues. You take control of a Dragon who can thow magic fireballs which can rejuvenate people, or you enemies. Then you can use your crystal ball to smash them. That's the problem, the crystal ball is the problem in the game as it is really hard to control ...

1 Meg games I will have to play on an emulator then

And I'm sure Ill get the hang of the controls in dragoon twins ;)

BTW Which games actually NEED the 1 meg ram expansion? Because like I

said above I dont have the 1 meg addon!

Cheers! :)
