ATARIPITBULL

I cant believe this is happening !

Recommended Posts

I posted just a little while ago that I was working on a room in my basement just for my Atari collection and I had already started building one wall and painted another white, plus I had laid down some black & white floor tile and even though it is not finished yet, it looks like my collection is already out groing the room. I think it might be because I love to collect Atari 2600 items complete with there boxes, but here are just a few pictures of what I am talking about.

The picture in the middle shows about 80 Atari 2600 ads framed that have not been hung up yet, I have about 140 framed ads in total and I still have more stuff coming to me like the Atari 2600 Gemini joysticks CIB, about three other joysticks, 5 boxed games, 1 six-switch 2600 CIB and a few other things I can't remember. My wife thinks I should stop, but I can't seem to do it, I think I am getting addicted to this stuff.

You'd best stop before your wife kicks your scrawny ass.

Besides, Save some games for the rest of us!!!

Organization. That is the key. That will create more room. Im trying to organize before I get in trouble with my wife. :ponder: I don't want to stop collecting either.

Good guess. :D But still....damn, does a man need to lose all of his assertiveness to prevent being overbearing? I doubt it. But I don't know why I'm typing all of this, since I was just teasing to begin with. Slow day at work.

Just make sure the stuff isnt exposed to much sunlight-

It will ruin the colors off all your boxes and stuff;

just like the video boxes near the windows at the movie rental stores :)

I keep my stuff in a pretty dark room for that reason.

There is more, just to the left of the shelf on the bottom picture, is another shelf with nothing but atari 2600 boxed games, infact I must point out that everything you see in these pictures are nothing but Atari 2600 stuff, nothing else.

 :) 8)

What are the dimensions of the room you are working on? I'm having a problem similar to yours. Right now, I'm working on a way to use the space I have as efficiently as possible while still having everything accessible. Ive been trying to figure out what I want displayed and what I'll be storing.

Its about 5 feet 8 inches wide & 11 feet long. I think one of the problems I am having is that I want to display everything in the room, because I have no doubles, so how can I choose what not to show ?. I am going to be buying 2 black book case shelves for most of my games and 3 black trophy cases for my systems and controllers, but I still do not have much space for my other stuff like my Atari & Activision bags, jackets, shirts, store displays, hell I even have a Atari sleeping bag.

Man, now thats a problem I wouldnt mind having! :) Very impressive collection!

A really good museum never displays more than 10% of its collection at a time (and thats high end). Being on display is really though on items. Light and temprature variations really kill things fast. So limiting what you have on display is a good idea and those items should never be on display for a long time unless they are very stable. Anyways, a good idea would be to pick 10% of your collection to put on display and put the rest away from the light in an area with a stable temerature. Then, every 6 months switch out that ten percent. This is a really good idea if you have freinds over to see the collections occasionly. This way they dont see everything you have the first time they come over. Instead they get to see a little bit at a time and are more impressed. People may actually be excited to come over and check out what you've put on display. Plus your wife will never really know how much you have ;)

I could go on and on about this. Sorry if it was too long but in college I kinda focused on museum studies. :)

I also have quite a small room with all my stuff in it. And along with 3 tv's and 10 systems hooked up there isn't much room for more.

Great collection (much better than mine) and hope you get it all in there.

Point: The repercussions of making this kind of purchasing decision without "consulting" (read: begging) first can often be so harsh as to make the purchase regrettable, no matter how much you want it.

Counterpoint: As a friend of mine in Atlanta (the one I went to the arcade auction with, when we both came home with a cabinet in tow) often said, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission."

I wonder which side I will fall on after Milwaukee next weekend... :ponder:

My collection has pretty much been hidden away since we moved into the apartment here in Minneapolis. (That's what happens when you lose 500 sq. ft. in a move!) I miss my basement in Atlanta... but that's about it.

Anyway, wife and child are going out of town for a week next week, so I am going to spend some time weeding out crap and clearing out closets and generally making more room for myself. The collection is going to assume its appropriate position of prominence!

I already managed to get the 5200, 7800 and NES crammed into the little glass-enclosed cabinet in the living room that the TV is on (and which also already housed the stereo, DVD player, and GameCube), but I am planning to put a couple of shelves up on the wall above it so I can display (and make accessible) some games and related stuff, while still keeping them save from the destructive power of a curious 14-month-old.

:D

You don't lose your assertiveness. You don't have to beg, but you have to compromise. I am lucky to have a wonderfully understanding wife. If I did not, I probably would be less likely to collect. I guess it depends on the relationship. Choose your battles, I suppose.

APB, most impressive goodies...:) I found those cheapo bookshelves from Office Depot or Staples really hold a ton of games (about 125 boxed games each) with room for the big stuff on top or on the sides. There are also some drawer type storage containers that do not look "awful", however you'll always know they are there.

Good luck man, you will LOVE it whenever its all organized and you can actually FIND stuff (that was my main problem for years....)

When you organize, you will end up with more room for more stuff. That is the benefit, plus you can tell your wife you making it more presentable. Im lucky enough to have a wife and mother in law that look for games for me though. Now if I could just get her to play the games.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has been going through the "organisational" time. I just bought myself some wooden flat pack bookshelves last week for my boxed titles. My stuff has resided in card boxes for over 18 months, since I moved last, and it has been utterly depressing without at least some of my Atari wares on display.

BTW - very nice job on the game room PB!! 8)
