How is the Wi-Fi for DS and PSP going to work?

Recommended Posts

I have never heard of this technology before. What is going to have to happen in order for one to use this function on their new handhelds? Will I have to sit in a coffe shop somewhere for hours each day to play online?

Oh my goodness you havn't heard of the beautiful thing that is Wireless Fidelity? :o

So if you have a wireless router I read that some games could use that to play games possibly online. But also the systems can use their built in wifi capabilities to play against the other systems wirelessly, which I think is what the main purpose of wifi is in these handhelds.

The PSP will be 802.11 if I'm not mistaken. This allows connection to home networks. I do see an "Online" option in the future, which is COOL, but not enough to make me want it.

The DS will be Bluetooth which is a technology used in so much stuff not-a-days. Phones especially. Even keyboards and mice. I see many possibilities with it too, but I'd have preferred 802.11 on it. Whatever, at least it's wireless, but I care not. I would have preferred online with my friends. Now, how damn cool would that be? Use the top screen to play, use the bottom to send messages ACROSS THE WORLD WITH BROADBAND!

Oh well.

Big deal.

All you have to do is look at the latest Pokemon games that come with a wireless adapter to see the potential.. You can challenge or trade with any Pokemon player that comes into your broadcast range! Umhh yeah. Right! :ponder: :D

DS has the 802.11 also. This is why I am looking to get help with this new-fangled tech stuff now, so when the DS hits, I'm ready to go on day 1. I hope the link above will help me..

Where did you read about Bluetooth? From what I read on IGN, Nintendo is using a proprietary networking and 802.11 also.

That's right, the system will feature wireless connectivity, both using a Nintendo proprietary technology as well as 802.11 support for a wide array of network capabilities. Nintendo has mentioned the possibility of linking the system in hotspots all over the world for connectivity with players thousands of miles away. The system will even support single cartridge multiplayer much like the Game Boy Advance, where specially-written games can be sent wirelessly to cartridge-free Nintendo DS systems.

Actually it didn't. Thanks shep, but it's all over my head, man! Long and short will I be able to play wirelessly from my porch with folks all over the place? I keep hearing about hotspots and such, which makes me wonder if I'll have to go to a specific place to get connected with players that are more than the 100ft away or whatever the BlueTooth can handle...

Short answer, the technology is there for it to work.

Long answer, we need more details from Sony and Nintendo.
