Adrian M #1 Posted May 27, 2004 But this is great news! http://xbox.gamespy.com/articles/519/519384p1.html Xbox Outsells PS2 in the U.S. According to Microsoft, armed with the NPD sales data for April 2004. Microsoft announced today that the Xbox has finally outsold the PlayStation 2 in the United States, according to sales data provided by NPD. For the month of April the Xbox garnered 51 percent of the US console market, spurred on by its March 30th price cut of the system. During E3 Sony Computer Entertainment also announced a price cut, which should make the numbers on console sales shift back and forth between the two console giants. According to sales data from GfK and ChartTrack the Xbox gained a combined market shares of 4 percent, up to 26 percent. No specific unit sales number were given.[/url]
oesii #2 Posted May 27, 2004 Pretty interesting, I think the PS2 needs some killer special editions like the Halo Xbox or the Zelda GameCube because it's so late in the game, if you wanted a PS2 and don't have one yet Myself, I'll wait till the next gen and PS2's will be under $30. And Adrian, I think this should be in your sig "I must apologize in advance for this...."

Mr.FoodMonster #7 Posted May 27, 2004 Good for them. All the millions of PS2 owners are getting kind of curious as to what they arent missing out on. MS is still LOSING money on every console they sell, so it works either way.
Adrian M #8 Posted May 27, 2004 Good for them. All the millions of PS2 owners are getting kind of curious as to what they arent missing out on. MS is still LOSING money on every console they sell, so it works either way. And they make money on the games, licensing and XBOX Live fees. Thanks for your insight though. Adrian M #9 Posted May 27, 2004 Before you gather up the lynch mob to string me up for posting this, realize that: 1. This is a modern gaming topic 2. I said nothing offensive 3. I have been civil throughout This is news and it would be nice if everyone would just take it as that and not get all wrapped up about "fanboy this" and "microsoft sucks", etc.
PaulEMoz #10 Posted May 27, 2004 It's not really that surprising. So many PS2s have already been sold that there HAD to be a slowdown eventually. Looks like that time may have arrived. I mean, who HASN'T already got a PS2 that wants one? Besides, even the Gamecube outsold the PS2 at one point (after the price drop), so it's not that exciting. It doesn't actually bother me which sells most. I've got a PS2, a GC and a PC, and would have an XBox if I wasn't moving continents in the near-ish future. Competition is healthy. figgler #11 Posted May 27, 2004 This happened to Cube too, sales spiked after a price slash. I think it's too bad that the leader in the console race is so far ahead that the other two can't come close unless the cut retail prices and take a financial hit. Even then, this will only last a month or two at most
ubersaurus #12 Posted May 27, 2004 Xbox has some good stuff upcoming...its like they're trying to appeal to the hardcore gamer more at this point. I mean, look at what they got comin...Slug 3 that just came out, a slew of 2d fighting games for Live (SF2, SF3, GGXX#R, SvC, Sam Sho 5 & Special, KOF 2k2 & 2k3), DoA Online, Halo 2, the EA Live deal, Fable, Xyanide, KOTOR 2, Perfect Dark Zero, it's pretty crazy. Live is definitely their main killer app, moreso then the games, even, because it gives them an advantage towards any games also getting released on PS2, such as, for example, the SF2/SF3 bundle. PS2 may have one this race, but I don't think it was ever MS's plan to win this console war, but rather, to build a brand name and good PR for the next gen, and in the process, it's given us some damn fine games. Honestly in this upcoming year, I see few PS2 games I want to get, but Xbox and Gamecube have a good number...I like how the runner ups are putting out some sweet games to try and differentiate themselves, as well as try to take that number 2 spot. Major Havoc 2049 #14 Posted May 27, 2004 Here are the April NPD numbers if anyone is interested. The PS2 will be back on top next month, now that it has dropped to $149.99. The Xbox almost passed the PS2 in February as well, but then it was software that drove the sales, with AAA games like Ninja Gaiden and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tommorow. The Xbox price drop and the Halo bundle is what drove April sales. figgler #15 Posted May 27, 2004 cut retail prices and take a financial hit. Short term losses are meaningless. The only number they are after is on the balence sheet at the end of the year. The losses won't be short term unless they increase the price to compensate . If MS was losing $X on systems before the cut, they are now losing $X + $Y to pass the cut to consumers. They may make up for some losses on sheer volume of sales and hence games sales for those systems sold, but probably not much. They are taking a financial hit long term to peddle the hardware
Godzilla #16 Posted May 27, 2004 boy, who knew so many people would get all 'partisan' over some simple facts. The Dreamcast II is the best of the current systems, IMHO. :-) But I own them all, so I can say this with comfort and without 'hating' cause all the current systems are good. MegaManFan #18 Posted May 27, 2004 It's not really that surprising. Indeed. Slash the price often enough and you'll end up one step ahead of Sony sooner or later.
HawgWyld #19 Posted May 27, 2004 Being a GameCube owner, I really don't have a dog in this fight as my system -- as usual -- trailed in April in terms of sales. However, it seems worth mentioning that the PS2 regularly beats on the xbox in sales. As for Microsoft's successful April, and old adage applies -- even a blind pig can find an acorn now and then. Peddling hardware is just the catalyst part of the overall equation which generally equates to a very positive positive. And besides, you could multiply the losses Sony and Microsoft make on hardware by a factor of 1000 and it would still barely make a dent.
