2600Lives #1 Posted May 30, 2004 Well, so I get the Beavis and Butthead Virtual Stupidity game off of The Underdogs. Took a while to download, since I'm on dialup, but now it won't run. Here is the exact error that pops up. Failed to initialize the Sound system. The Sound system may be in use by another Application. Please close the other Application and hit Retry. (if you select Cancel, B&B will close) And it will go no further. I've tried running it with NO other programs running, but still no dice. Anybody got any idea where the conflict might come from? Thanks in advance!
Trooper #2 Posted May 30, 2004 Well you could try to see if there's a sound setup where you could disable the sound just to see if it would run without sound. If that works there must be some app holding the soundcard hostage, check to see if there's a memory resident sound handler (Sound blaster app?). Look through the task manager to see what's there and try closing down the apps one by one to see which one's causing the problem. What OS are you running? /Troop
Inky #3 Posted May 30, 2004 I'd create a DOS boot floppy with all the CD and Soundcard drivers on it, boot up with that, and then try running it.
ShyOne #4 Posted May 30, 2004 Took a while to download, since I'm on dialup, but now it won't run. Good! Signed, Producer, Beavis & Butt-head in Virtual Stupidity
Avid Fan #5 Posted May 30, 2004 Funny, this game is the only game I've been able to run off every computer I've owned with absolutely no problems
Mr.FoodMonster #6 Posted May 30, 2004 ShyOne - Hehehe Well, my best guess is that its probably a SB-16 and requires that card, like oh-so many older games. It also runs fine on all the 4 operating computers at my house, ranging from 98-XP pro. Dunno what to tell you. Maybe send ShyOne a fiver?

ShyOne #8 Posted May 30, 2004 ShyOne - Hehehe Actually, she isn't kidding. Eh ... I am, and I'm not ... On the one hand, it's cool to know that the game is good enough people still want to play it, and I suppose I should just be happy about that. On the other, there's always something just a little 'scratchy' about hearing that people are participating in piracy of something you put a LOT of hard work into. Not that it would make any financial diff to me, one way or another, but there are still plenty of legit copies of the game around to be had quite inexpensively, on ebay, for instance. It's not like d/l is the only way to get your hands on and play the game ... As old as the game is, not a big deal ... I just couldn't resist a tiny 'poke' at 2600Lives, that's all. Mr.FoodMonster #9 Posted May 31, 2004 ShyOne - Hehehe Actually, she isn't kidding. I know, its just funny that she would chime in on it like she did a few months ago when we were talking about the game. Hense the 'Send ShyOne a fiver' at the end of my post. Shannon #11 Posted May 31, 2004 Took a while to download, since I'm on dialup, but now it won't run. Good! Signed, Producer, Beavis & Butt-head in Virtual Stupidity Fix it so it will run on modern machines and maybe we will pay ya for it. Contemplates the meaning of the word abandonware. Shannon #12 Posted May 31, 2004 Hmm since edit message seems to be turned off... Maybe I should read the whole thread before replying. Didn't realize a virtual someone was virtually involved in the making of the program.

I *had* it off that site at one point but I haven't bothered with it. It was good for a few days but then it got tedious fast. Beavis and Butt-head are only good in small doses.
