ttony_at #1 Posted May 31, 2004 I have an old Candle TV set and noticed the similarity between the Candle logo and the Atari logo. This TV set was manufactured '84 and used an elongated "i" in the centre instead of what the Atari logo has. Too much to be a coincidence. Anyway, I sometimes play Atari 2600 games on that TV set. Ze_ro #2 Posted May 31, 2004 I've seen speakers with that logo on them too... I never really thought much about it at the time. I'm guessing Atari used the logo first, and Candle ripped it off? (Or does Candle pre-date Atari? I haven't looked into it at all) --Zero

Mindfield #4 Posted May 31, 2004 Yeah, I remember Candle. Cheap crap. And I remember their logo looking a heck of a lot like Atari's, too. Candle, along with Citizen, Electrohome, and a number of other cheap brand names, was a subsidiary of Jutan International Ltd. The logo was meant to represent the initials of that parent company (JIL) as seen here on this Citizen walkman: Yep. Looks a lot like Atari's logo, but it's just stylized initials, not a representation of Mt. Fuji. An interesting coincidence, though.
NintendoDieScreaming #5 Posted May 31, 2004 There's a old out-of-business place here that used to sell TVs by a company called 'Quasar'. I don't know why the building is still standing, from what I know, it's been closed since the 80s. I've never seen it open. Anyway, they're logo is the Exact same thing as Atari's logo, except each line is a different color.
Mindfield #6 Posted May 31, 2004 Must be a different company than the common 80s cheap electronics manufacturer. Their logo was their name with a flare over it between the "a" and "s." They used to make televisions, stereos and home appliances.

Quasar 'made' many fine old tv's and were responsible for the wonderful "Great Time Machine" VCR. This thing was made circa 79-81, I believe. It was neither Beta or VHS but used a stacked reel cartridge and funky video heads. It record 2 or 4 hours depending on tape size. They also marketed a couple of video games of the pong type. I suppose Zenith will eventually be just a memory for a few of us as well. How many names from yesteryear can you remember? Philco, Admiral and DuMont come to mind... I know at one time, within the last decade, Daewoo had been buying up old American brand names and Philco was one of them. I used to have a 10 inch color tv made in the early 90's, I think. It was 'Philco'. And, hey, Tropicana is great!

I'll go live in it, and soon, small childeren everywhere will talk about THE HAUNTED ELECTRONICS SHOP FROM THE 70S!!!!!!!!!!!!

AtariDude #15 Posted June 6, 2004 I am surprised that Atari never sued them since the logo looks a lot like the Fuji that Atari used. Given how litigious that era was, I just wonder how they were not asked to redo their logo.
povlok1 #16 Posted June 6, 2004 is Coleco still in business?
AtariDude #17 Posted June 6, 2004 No. The Adam computer drained a lot of their money and if not for the popularity of the Cabbage Patch Dolls, they would have gone out of business sooner. It only prolonged things for them for a while and they eventually sold the Cabbage Patch franchise to another company.

I do remember playing Atari games on a small Candle TV and never noticed the logo on the TV until a few years ago. Hey, I wonder how Atari fans subliminally bought Candle TVs, Citizen cassette machines because of the logo?

Lost Monkey #20 Posted December 1, 2004 ...Electrohome... At some point 198?-199? Mitsubishi products were being sold in Canada with the Electrohome brand.. and they were awesome. I don't know who is making the stuff with the E-home name now, but it is all absolute shite.... actually worse than shite, shite could keep an LED lit longer than the new Electrohome shite. It's shitey-er than shite, it's shit-est, if I may say so.

Jutan likely sold off most of their subsidiaries in the late 80s; I don't even know if JIL still exists in any significant form, but I haven't seen their logo sported on any products in ages. Whoever currently owns Electrohome are probably trying to see if they can outdo JIL's various arms in cost cutting measures.
A2600 #23 Posted December 1, 2004 You're meaning to tell me this crappy shop has ben closed for 30 years? Jeez, why is it still standing? If they tear it down, Im stealing the sign. Well maybe not! City expansion gives way to older things in the time range of 20 to 15 so im going to place my bet that shop closed its doors in 1985 or 86. 30 years of a free standing builing is a lot of time in an expanding city. But Oh Well!! Look, man how big is that sign?? Just make a plan to go after 2:00AM and take it. Heck back in Puerto Rico in 1996 the only Nintendo Service Center in the whole island closed its doors and I still regret myself for not sneeking in and taking a peek, I would imagine stacks high of NES and SMS games as the center serviced Nintendo, Sega and Atari. I wanted to steal the cool Nintendo and Sega signs and never did, could of had a shot at the Dr. Nintendo Sign!! too bad the place blew up in 1998!! But luckily the buildiing is still standing with its charred remains!! now in 2004 a company bought her to make her into a club!! The place was huge I tell ya!! I went there in January 1992 because they where the only ones who had SNES games in the whole island!! JUST TAKE THE SIGN!! No Pain No Gain!! Just Dont Get Caught!! Looks like it is a name only organization that licenses the name to other companies: http://www.electro.com/products/branded_products.htm I think Daewoo is making Electrohome branded dvd players, but it might be Emerson/Orion-see below. Fujitsu is making projectors: http://svconline.com/mag/avinstall_cedia_e...deja/index.html Orion made/makes the tv's and vcrs: www.rivernet.net/~gelectr/brandwars.html After Mitsubishi dumped the brand, Citizen apparently made Electrohome branded products.
