nes classic smb for the gba question

Recommended Posts

i just played through smb for the gba the first time, and now that i've beaten it every time i turn on the game to play again i can only play it on the harder "second time around" setting. there must be some way to play it the original way again, can anyone tell me whats going on?, am i overlooking something?

Hmm.. very strange. My Japanese one doesn't do this. I've beaten it a few times and played the Harder version, but it always starts up regularly. Haven't bought the US version yet, but I wonder if there's an option that accidentally got turned on that makes it save your progress like that. Weird.

Well, first see if anyone else here has the US version. Remember I only have the Japanese one. Have you looked all through your manual?

Also, maybe try other forums as well. Nintendo official or even Digital Press. SOMEONE must have played it through by now.

And if it comes down to returning it, ask the employees if they had this brought up.

First though, try the menu that comes up when you press R and L. On mine, it's Japanese, but I know the fourth option is "Save Hi-Score". Maybe the US one has a way to reset it or turn it off..

well, i have indeed already read through the manual and and menu that comes up when you press L and R, and no there is no mention of a way of turning off or reseting the save hi score function after you have saved it in the manual at all. and there is certainly no option for this in the menu. this is why i posted here to see if any one else who has the game has encountered the same issue.

interestingly enough though, i can also play on the last level i was on by holding A and pressing start as well every time i turn the game on, and the last level i happened to play was the minus world, so now upon turning the game on i have the option of chose any of the levels at the harder setting by pressing B, or holding A and pressing start and playing the minus world, but i still cannot play the levels on the original setting. not that i am inferring any of this has to do with the game not letting me play on the orignal setting, as it was doing this before i went to the minus world.

Hmm.. Well, hopefully I'll get this soon. Maybe tomorrow. I'll have to do some testing. I don't think it's defective though, but it's strange they'd make it remember your position and not give a way to start over.

Is there an option to delete all memory? Probably not, but worth a try. As I only know one listing on that list.

Very strange if it does indeed keep settings like that.

It sounds like the high score save is also preserving locations in RAM that remember if you should be playing on hard mode, and also what stage to continue on. I think there's something you can do to reset the save data. Try holding L and R while turning on the GBA. The Ice Climber manual says you can do that to clear the score and such.

excellent, that works with smb as well.

however i still would like to know if anyone else has encountered the same situation, so i can decide if my game is defective.

Hold out for a bit. I just bought the US version today (And aside from noticing they FIXED the "Missing Mustache" problem...) I'll let you know my findings as soon as I can get a nice score. And beat Bowser, KING of the Koopa's!

ok. i just went through the game again and saved the score this time just before i walked over to the princess and it saved the score okay without keeping the game locked in the harder setting. so try saving it when the game goes back to the title screen after you've beaten it, as that's when it locks in to the harder mode on the cart i have.
