Collection Cataloging

Recommended Posts

At some point, I remember seeing a program that allowed people to track and catalog the various games they had for various systems and what extras they had (box, instructions, condition, etc). I also know there are some services out there that let you do the same thing.

I'm interested in using one to start tracking what is in my collection overall. Are there still any good free tools out there, or should I just use MS Excel or something?

Thanks!

Hey thanks!

I think I'll be trying out Cart Commander tonight. Anything I should know about the software before I put it in? Any tricks?

Thanks again everyone!

Yes! Make sure you make full use of the ability to enter both Release year and Copyright year, which can often be different. And use it beacuase that was my suggestion!!!...a mini cart commander claim to fame!

Its great for churning out your collection in HTML format so you can quickly stick up clear, consice web pages for friends to look at to check trades etc.

Use that for problems like Cybermorph, hunh? That'll actually be important to my Jaggy collection :)

No, nothing particular you should know.....just that it's a little on the complex side but that's a good thing! The one thing I don't like about it is that it seems to be a dead project. They haven't updated or added any systems' lists in a while, the last I think was the Dreamcast, which was at least a year ago....

BUT, the 3 main Atari systems have a pretty good database with release dates, catalog numbers, rarity scale, etc....

I like it!

Pifall Warning:

Keep on top of it

Dont buy 30 or 40 games from various places over the course of a couple of months and think "I'll stick them all in later, in one big chunk".

Get a new game in the mail, stick it in Cart Commander as soon as youve checked that the cart works.

heh i know that feeling, i would put it in as soon as i got a game, but i dont like the newer version of the CC, and the older one i was using on win98 wont work in winXP or i cant get it to work, just another reason to keep win98 ;)

Cart Commander is OK...I've used it and thought it was fine, but not great.

Any spreadsheet or database program will work well. Here's what I personally use:

Nah, to heck with all those fancy-pants spreadsheets and such. I just stick with the Hawg method:

1. Buy a bunch of those huge, Tupperware tubs (the kind made of see-through plastic)

2. Assign tubs for Atari 2600 carts, Sega Genesis games, NES & etc.

3. Stack carts -- complete with boxes, sleeves or whatever, in tubs.

4. Repeat when out of boxes

5. Wind up with a duplicate game here and there due to poor catalog system

6. Cuss a lot. Yell. Rant.

7. Sell off duplicates on eBay

Yep. Works like a charm!

Well yeah I could write one. I'm actually thinking about doing it with the Cocoa development tools that came with my mac.

I used to use a Mac and I do recall there being a variety of shareware inventory apps. Just do a search over on macdownloads or something.

Failing that, just search for a template or pre-made Filemaker/AW DB.

I have done some searches on version tracker but I am kind of in the mood for a programming project anyway. I want to make the catagories customizable so that I could even track things like Heroclix and Magic cards.

Oh, and I'm a geek.
