Atari 5200 Hardware and Accessories

The 5200 was not as successful as the 2600, so there is significantly less available for it in the way of hardware ...

 

What would you all say is the relationship between the consoles?

 

Would you say something like:

2600	70%
5200	5%
7800	25%

 

and I was not even adding the Lynx and Jaguar systems.

5% might be a little low on this one. I've had quite a few 5200s pass through my hands over the past few years. Maybe something like this:

 

2600--50%

5200--20%

7800--30%

After thrifting and flea marketing for many years I would say the 5200 and 7800 show up about equally around here.

 

The loins share is still 2600, probably 70% 2600 and 15% each 7800/5200.

 

I've only seen a lynx or jaguar a rare handful of times, hardly enough to even count.

Certainly Atari must have sold more Atari 5200 systems than 7800? The 7800 didn't have a very long shelf life, while the 5200 was pushed hard by Atari for several years. It could be that people threw out their 5200 systems due to the faulty controllers and the evil RF switchbox of the first generation systems, but I'd expect to find more 5200s. Of course, the 7800 is a newer system, so perhaps that helps balance it out.

 

I don't think anyone will contest that the 2600 is much more common than either of the other two..

So then, it is just my bad luck that I can't find a 5200 console. I have found a few 2600 consoles, and I have found 2 7800 consoles ( I bought both)

 

but never a 5200

At one of my local flea markets, I've seen several 2600s, a 5200 (which I bought), but no 7800s. In fact, the only 7800 item I've found is Centipede (which of course, I bought).
