Which classic games always kept you coming back for more?

Recommended Posts

I'm not talking about the classic games you played a few times, but the ones you used to always come back to in the Arcades, or the cartridges that you always looked forward to playing at home each week.

For me there were a lot of games like that. If I saw a machine, for example Galaga, Twin Cobra, Xain'd Sleena, Rastan, Outrun, Wardner, Wonderboy In Monster Land, STUN Runner, Double Dragon, or vector Star Wars, I would *HAVE* to put some quarters into it no matter what else I was doing. Even later there were lots of newer games in arcades with a similar effect on me, like Space Gun, Samurai Shodown, etc.

Seems like certain players are just destined to "connect" with certain games. What are yours?

I think I put our local arcades owners kids through college playing Moon Patrol and Mr Do's Castle.

On consoles, I probably have played Super Mario 3 and the original Legend of Zelda more than any other game.

Whenever I have/do see a Simpsons 4-player cabinet, I ALWAYS play it. One of the coolest beat 'em ups of all time if you ask me. Granted, there are a few others as well, but that the most.

Bonk, Pac Man (of any variety), Pole Position (until I bought a warehouse full of them, and TOTALLY burned out on the experience...having 16 non-working of anything has that effect), Kaboom and Reactor. Its sort of a mix of arcade/console, but the fav's nonetheless.

To this day, I can't walk past a Pacman, Galaga, Ms. Pacman, or pinball machine without eventually popping a few quarters in and going for the high score.

Robotron ate my lunch money.

For home systems Adventure on the VCS was always my number one favorite. For NES it was SMB3 and any Megaman title.

The original Zelda and PinBot.

It's nearly impossible for me to say no to either of these

Super Mario Brothers 3. Bought it on the day of launch, and still probably play it once a month. Usually, I just go to different levels and beat them to see everything again. I love this game. I've gotten altogether better at it than any other game I've ever owned, and can consistently get the white mushroom houses to show up :D

Ms. Pac-Man in the arcades.

Pitfall II on the 2600.

Lost Eden on the 3DO. Not overly consistently, but more than usual games.

Tempest 2000 for the Jaguar. Every once in a while, I get the urge to pick it up and suddenly five hours have gone by...

Oddly enough, no classic game has ever had me coming back to it more than a few times. In games, I always like the thrill of the new, and when I've experienced the game a few times, that has gone and I move on.

I much prefer games that show you something new as you progress rather that games that just cycled through the same activity, ramping up hte score and difficulty as it went.

Now I think about it, all of these great arcade machines that I have such fond memories of - Space Invaders, Asteroids, Star Wars etc. have never had more than 5 or 6 coins out of me each. Strange how nostalgia afffects the memory :)

I will play a game of Arkanoid almost everytime I see it. I just can't get enough of that game. Tapper would be a close second, but I don't see that one too much. And if I ever see an arcade Kickman again, I will probably empty my wallet into it. LOL.

Ok, in order. 1 is most played ever.

1. Super Mario Bros. (NES) Every hookup of the nes, this gets played. It was the first game I ever played ever.

2. Super Mario Kart (SNES) I played this every day before and after school, and weekends, when I was in late elementary/early middle school. Gold on everything.

3. Phantasy Star Online versions 1 and 2 (Dreamcast) and since it stores how many hours you put into each character, if I add all my 6 character's hours up it's around 2500 total and I was just playing it right now with my friend on Gamcecube so..

4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Genesis) I just remember playing this all the time.

5. Super Mario RPG (SNES) I beat it over, and over, and over....

6. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) Ditto as #3

7. The Need for Speed/Gex (3DO) played em to death!

8. Monster Rancher 2 (Playstation) don't have a copy yet, but if I had it, I'd be all over it again with my gold flower pot monster named Miyamato% (my-uh-mah-toh-percent)! (my friend had this game)

9. Theme Park (any platform but I have it for Saturn, Jaguar, 3DO, and my friend had the Playstation one) god damn this addictive game

10. Bust a Move 2: Arcade Edition

11. Mario Bros. (any platform but I really like NES and 5200 versions)

And now, since my friend is over, here is his list:

1. PSO (any)

2. Monster Rancher Series

3. Pokemon series

4. Disgaia (PS2)

5. Final Fantasy Series

6. Super Mario RPG (SNES)

7. Ogre Battle series

8. Animal Crossing (GameCube)

9. Harvest Moon series

10. Heroes of Might and Magic (PC)

Hooray!

Contra III, Super Mario World, Galaga, and Stargate.

Those are my top four video games of all time, actually they're tied for first place.

Well, in arcades, Golden Axe/Bad Dudes/that alien side scroller.

On consoles, Harvest moon series and Zelda games probably take the cake. And tempest 200 was almost always played, although I have since upgraded to the Nuon version. Super Monkey Ball gets a lot of play time as well, as does pitfall 2, Custer's revenge and Ghost manor. Dark Tower and Scramble on the Vectrex, as well. I think most popular multiplayer game in my house is the O2 game, showdown in 2100 AD. Man, those ricocheting bullets are just killer.

I have been though Final Fantasy 2 so many times that I can now beat in about 12 hours.

For the most part, I don't play games much after I have beaten them. Although there have been games that I have never gotten tired of and I could probably list, but never like Final Fantasy 2. I always go back a couple times a year.

There are just too many console games to list that were favorites then and are now, so I'll just list my favorite classic console game: Megaman 2. I beat this game so many times, it's insane. I still play through it about once a year. I have more memories in this game than any other.

As for arcades, there's Rolling Thunder, TMNT, Galaga, and Pole Position just to name a few. I spent as much money as my parents would give me on Rolling Thunder when we went to Walmart. Memories...

The arcade version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I was a huge Turtles freak back then, and it helps that the game is one of the better side-scrollers even without the Turtles tie-in. While I was quite capable before then of playing a game for hours on end, TMNT was the first arcade game I would actually save money for, dreaming of the next time I could make it to the mall. And this went on for months!

When I discovered it had been ported to the C-64 (the bast gaming platform I had at the time), I went ballistic. That game was to be MINE!
