Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - GBA

Recommended Posts

why?

I've played BG1 and BG2 and really enjoyed both. The style of play and freedom to deviate are privitol in the game's success. You can pick and choose your adventures, your group mates, and lots of other options.

So I picked up BG:DA for the GBA thinking it would be sort of the same but perhaps with different story lines and characters. It's not even close :|

It's more similar to Dungeon Siege than BG

So I begin to play and I quickly found a few annoyances right off:

- when you talk with someone, you scroll through the text by hitting your attack button(A) - When you finish talking you invariably take a swing at them with whatever weapon you are holding. It was funny once and then annoying every time after that - I can't see how it can be avoided.

- The "save to the last level start" is simply just pissing me off. Not the kind of save that Zelda's LttP where you retain all the goodies, but you start over from scratch. I understand and respect this style of play from older dingeon crawl type games, but for the "on the go" hand held GBA it's a HUGE no no. Going back through levels over and over are not fun, especially when it's no fault of your own like a sudden burst of sunlight on the screen or something more distracting.

I've lost interest after completing the 1st level of the thiefs guild. I might pick it up again, but I'm enjoying Advance Wars right now(what an addicting game "just one more turn then I have to quit")

Well, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for GBA is simply meant to be a handheld version of the console game BG: Dark Alliance, which has little or nothing to do with the PC games. The BG: Dark Alliance games are kind of like a 3D Diablo game, with an emphasis on action and very little in the way of role-playing and zilch in the way of open-endedness. They're not bad games, if you like action/RPG's.

And I like the GBA version, because there's aren't many Diablo-style action/RPG's on the GBA. Some of the level design annoys me, and the story is about as generic as they come, but it has good action and nice graphics. I'd still like to see a true Diablo game on the handheld.
