How many ROMS have never been dumped?

Recommended Posts

Ya, I know this question probably has about a billion answers, and yes I'm talking about all systems.

I'll limit my example to a few.

1) Earth Defense for Sega Genesis.

Yes I've heard it's a terrible game, but it's the only Genesis rom I have left to get if you believe a majority of the game lists on the net.

2) Aircars, BattleSphere, Breakout 2000, and so on an so on for Jaguar.

I've been to a BUNCH of rom sites, and these (among others) never seem to be downloadable or listed as available for download.

No, this is not a rom request. No I don't want anyone to send them to me in a PM. It's just me wondering why some games get dumped and posted and some never do?

I guess what I'm getting at is, "Who are dumping these in the first place?" And if 599 out of 600 (completely random #'s) possible games are available to D/L for a system, wouldn't that irk the obsessive compulsive people (I know you're out there) that collect, play, and or emulate games to find/buy that one last game and post it?

Believe me, I'm not loosing any sleep over not having some of these. I'll never play them anyway, but it sparks my curiosity none-the-less. Has anyone else ever wondered the same thing???

Thanks!

I can't answer question 1 but I will comment on question 2. Those Jag games you list are still available from the original/authorized dealer so people have not circulated the ROMs.

I very much doubt you can attribute the dumping of all the Genesis cartridges out there to a single person. There are probably a bunch of different people who get curious enough to build/purchase a device to dump the cartridge, and then post it on the net. This is partially why all the [o]'s and 's are out there, since not everyone gets it right.

Frankly, I say fuck the perfectionists. They're the ones who want the rom just to have it. They likely will never play the game anyways (perhaps just once to make sure it works).

Well, I'm not saying I'm a perfectionist and need all of these roms. Earth Defense is unlicensed by Sega anyway. . .from what I understand. And I've been more or less looking for Authorized games. I really don't care about the hacks/homebrews/prototypes/pirates. Plus, when you can download one .7z file at a pretty good clip and have everything in a few minutes, why not?

And I never assumed it was one person. I just find it odd that the "people" who do the dumping (because obviously there's more than one) would leave one out?

And for Mitch's reply, I know that most of the places you get ROMS from are unsavory places shall we say, so I don't think the fact that the games are still available from the distro people is what's stopping them. I mean if that was the case, why are all the Mario games (NES through GBA) available on the same sites where you can get 85% of the Jag games.

I am NOT looking to start a fight or a big debate. I'm just truely curious about why a few certain files seem IMPOSSIBLE to find. :?

And Mitch, I am still unclear about the Jaguar being released to the public. Is it just the hardware then? Because if it was the whole ball of wax I guess I would assume that those files would be available everywhere, up to and including cnet.com.

Thanks for your thoughts! :P

No, it's the people that dump the games that won't distrubute the newer stuff.

Most (all?) of the people that dump the Jag games also help develop new games for the Jag.

That's cool. It's the stuff like this that I like learning about. And it seems like Emulation is a pretty low key area in terms of the rest of the hobby/field if this forum is any indication. I'd like to see more posts in this section because it's pretty interesting. (To this guy anyway.)

My question is: How do you dump a rom? with the old computer 8 bit it was easy there was actually a device that did most of the work for you. But everything else?

Same way. Most console systems had such devices made (or could be assembled) that do the same thing...fetch the cart data and feed it into a PC file.
