Any reason for the different colors on the Cart end labels?

Recommended Posts

Was there any reason the end labels on the Atari 2600 carts were: Blue, Red, Yellow, Orange?

For variety, think how boring they would be if they were all white text on a black background.

Don't forget green! Yeah, I think it is for variety, if nothing else. I haven't checked, but maybe they are colour coded by genre.

They tended to roughly match the color of the box they came in, and the color of the text on the manual cover (at least once they abandoned the lil' black book format).

I don't think it's by genre because a good portion of the games are orange.

If you get into it, there are color variations amongst the same game. Black Lettering on Midnight Magic instead of White Lettering for example.
