Saturo Iwata's proposed gaming Revolution

Recommended Posts

In light of enigmatic quotes such as:

The definition for a new machine must be different. I want you to know that Nintendo is working on our next system and that system will create a gaming revolution. Internal development is underway.

and

Different also defines our approach to our next home system. It won't simply be new or include new technologies. Better technology is good, but not enough. Today's consoles already offer fairly realistic expressions so simply beefing up the graphics will not let most of us see a difference. So what should a new machine do? Much more. An unprecedented gameplay experience. Something no other machine has delivered before.

What do you think it will be? It's difficult for me to imagine anything beyond a new controller of some sort. But he's certainly using strong words, so it leads one to believe that it must be more. Will the idea actually work, catch on and start a revolution in gaming?

It's Big N's equivalent of Sony's exaggerated next-system claim specs. I wouldn't pay any attention to it.

Well, we all know the big N isn't afraid to try out nonconventional ideas... like the VB and DS and the bizarre controllers of the N64 and Cube...

... but this is also the company that tends to arrive late on the scene in regards to modern technolgy - such as media format and (widespread) online gaming support.

If I knew what was going to be the "next big thing," I'd be out there making it. I'm sure that's exactly what Nintendo thinks it's doing, and they've been right before. We'll see if it happens again...

Took the words right out of my mouth! :)

Maybe Nintendo has some kind of Virtual Reality idea? No, not like the Virtual Boy(which, by the way, I love), rather, actual 3d immersion(headset tracker, force feedback, ect.)?

To be honest, it's quite hard to imagine a way to play games that hasn't been done that is still fun. I'm curious as to what Nintendo plans on unveiling for the "N-5".

I read this article earlier today. I also read that article from maybe a week ago about some Nintendo president in Europe (maybe?) that was blaming MS for the early release of new consoles and the horrible act of making systems more powerful and how the GTA franchise is basically just a fad. It seems that whenever Nintendo comes up short, they just point the finger at everyone else and make the claim that Nintendo knows all and does it better. Well, whatever. Anyways it is sorta interesting what they may have up their sleeve but honestly, it seems to just be another empty promise from them. They were the originators of "hype" and with that the originators of never following through with it. Maybe after 7 or 8 years of promises, they will finally deliver :ponder:

It would be interesting if someone could remember to *BUMP* this thread in 2006 to see if it is true or just the usual BS.

Chances are, it will be the latter.

But yes, someone should bump this in 2006.

I really don't give a shit one way or the other about the corporate reasoning and the success/non-success of the unit as far as the company goes.

I simply would be interested as to what they do in fact release, and if it's any sort of attempt at trying something cool and new, I'm all over it. At the very least it will have a place of honor next to my Virtual Boy 8)

But that's part of the fun.

I've been thinking for awhile that it can go in a few directions..

1 - Having true rich opaque "holographic" images pop up on a table of sort that players can interact through controllers of some sort. Fighting games would be awesome! I think scrollers would be interesting as well. In RPG games you can move around the table for different vantage points to reveal different things.

2 - After seeing those robots from Honda and a few other companies, which seem to have full fluid movements - I can only imagine them interacting in fights or whatever. But I suppose that would be more of a remote controlled type of interaction.

I really like the holographic idea :ponder:

I know for a fact the next Nintendo's games are based only on insane holographic furry porn.

Have all the fun you want ;) But personally I like playing games and checking out new and cool consoles when they come out, etc. It's like any product.. whether it be cars, movies or heck even cereal. e.g. I just like eating Reeses Puffs. I don't really care about the financial situation and long term cereal strategy of Ralston Purina vs. General Mills or whoever the heck they are :P

Nintendo puts out something nice and I dig it? Then I'm going to buy it. If Nintendo folds the next year.. hey, doesn't matter to me, I'll have that piece of hardware in my collection still for good and be able to play whatever the heck games I got for it :)

What idea? Making obscure references to nothing much? Doesn't seem very revolutionary. :?

Ahh here is a sneak peek at the first revolution.... their next controller

I was against the N64's controllers for the longest time.... but then I actually used one.

To this day, it has the most sensitive analog stick of any of the consoles I've played (meaning: smallest 'area' or range of motion before input registers; a sensitivity dead zone). The dinosaur controller's toes were strange... hell, they still are, but it holds comfortably enough. I'd say the only real problem I have is that the directional pad was barely used, and I didn't care for game programmers not supporting it as a play option, even if, in play practicality, it was only useful for navigating menus.

I do have a bitch with the GameCube's X, Y, and Z buttons, and the Z stick isn't sensitive enough.

im just waiting for any kind of real world 3d display. They already have 3d lcd panels that give a solid 3d display when viewed within a 40 degree cone or some such. would be interesting to see this (or any other 3d display technology,) applied to a game console...
