Throw games away?

They were so expensive back in the day so I would never have done that. I wouldn't be alive today if I threw away a game my folks bought for me!!

Some of you guys must have been very rich in the early 80's. :?: :!:

I think it's less about having enough money to chuck games as just being so overwhelmed w/ the badness...

I agree with Azrael over Israel here...

Because games were so expensive, I grew to love games (such as Pele's Soccer -- probably the inspiration for the Lakers' "triangle offense" ;) ) that I thought were dud purchases nearly as much as other games (such as Kaboom! and Missle Command) that were great from the first play.

Also, any game was valuable as trade bait. I would use games I didn't like as much to loan to my neighbors so I could play one of their games that I liked more!

I never threw any games away, except for those I got for my Intellivision II in 1984, because that system was malfunctioning and I didn't have money to get myself another one or to get the current one fixed. But yes, there were games that I would reconsider buying if I ever had to live my life over.

I've never thrown out a game. My sister threw up on Pac Man and Missile Command, but I saved them. :D

I've never thrown away any game. Back-in-the-day I would return games that I didn't like, and get different ones. This is when stores (mainly Toys-R-Us) had a much more liberal return policy. I returned 2600 stuff like Q*Bert, James Bond 007, Pac-Man, Xonox Spike's Peak/Ghost Manor, and a few others. Not always because I didn't like a game, but rather that was the only way I could try a bunch of them out (they were expensive). :D

After Toys-R-Us changed to a "no unopened games" return policy, I found a way to re-seal a few of the games and still returned them. But that only happened once or twice. Some of the better games I ended up purchasing later anyway.

I certainly bought some stinkers though, especially from the post-crash bargain-bins. There are games in my collection in fact that I've never played, that I bought 20 years ago, and some that I've played maybe once. Still, I won't get rid of them since they're "part of the family".

I recently acquired some loose commons though, that I may send in to AtariAge for recycling?. I have no use for extra Combats, Space Invaders, etc.

I never actually threw one away, but a few years ago when I started becomeing a "classic video game collector" I bought a copy of BUGS from the thrift store. I think the game is supposed to use paddles but I was using the joystick or something. As a result of my stupid mistake, i made another stupid mistake and returned the game to the thrift shop the next day to get my 59c cent refund!

As for Pitfall 2, I really thought that it was a fun game and a great achivement for the 2600. But I will agree that once you win, theres no point in playing again. (and I never did) :) Nevertheless, Its quite a cool game.

There's not much of a disagreement, really. Most of us, myself included, grew up in a world where we almost couldn't throw away ANY game, because of parental pressure or just sheer-bloody-mindedness. So for a game to be SO bad it made it to the trash...that's a REALLY bad game, and worth talking about.

I know, Kirk -- it's just that my 'azrael/israel' pun was so bad that it had to be let out...
