Kids & Atari 2600

Recommended Posts

How do you think: what is children's attitude towards A2600 and classic games nowadays?

My younger brother (8 years), fan of Pokemons, Harry Potter, Ricky Martin etc., just loves Sky Diver, Human Cannonball, Bowling, Frogger and Enduro;) He likes also Air-Sea Battle, Miniature Golf, and Activision's Boxing (while I have all Mortal Kombats and two Virtua Fighters on CDs!!!). Seems that some games will never get beaten by time...

I think that young kids would love those kind of simple, action-oriented games sooner as they would like more complicated 'newer' games. But my guess would be, as soon they reach puberty they want to play flashy games with lots of violence to show to their friends ;)

Well I think that children of this day and age will still enjoy the games.

Obviously it's not gonna last far into the future(Probably but we will see...)

but there are some modern games that IMO look and play worse than classic games.

Here is an example:

Megamania: fun game, Bright colours - Vib Ribbon: Fake Vector Graphics and Poor Gameplay (IMO)

If games like that get made all the while then we are definatly going to play

the originals if it means a beter game aren't we?

I was born sometime late eighties (Im not saying year because I want my age to be private)

and although I was brought up with classic games, I admit I did stop and moved on with the times but I always missed the classics like River Raid.

So I found another Atari, got some games and I was away.

But recently I was forced to sell it (Needed money badly) but Im still looking

for another and when I find it I doubt I'll let this one go.

When I speak to other kids sometimes they dont know what I mean when

I say "classic games" so I show them what classic is and either put on

the old console thats nearest to me and most of the time they enjoy the games better than some modern playstation games.

So yes I think myself that classics will live on for some time yet. ;)

I have a 16 year old sister who thinks I am wasting my time and money on Atari, my 3 year old son & 1 year old daughter love it, they enter my Atari room in my basement every time they go downstairs and the first thing out of my sons mouth is " Daddies big Atari " while my daugther just looks around and shrugs her shoulders, but the best part is they do not touch a thing ever and I have never had to tell them not to.

  :D

Well, the Jakks Pacific TV Games are generally found in the toy isles of discount stores rather than in the electronic departments and are apparently selling pretty well. I know, a roundabout answer to the question but not completely unrelated I think.

My girl friend has a 2 year old daughter and every time i look at atariage i set her on my lap so we can look at it togeather and ever time there is a post that was a pic of a game or system she exclaims ( TAR TAR) in her language that is ATARI. she is only 2 but she really love ms. Pacman which is fun to play with her. But on occasion she does get into my loose games and she has thrown several of them over the child barrior at the top and down the stairs. But thank god none above a rarity 4.

My brother thinks its cool that i collect all types of video games. He is not really into playing atari but plays my nes. He also helps me catlog and find my games. When we go to fleamarkets we make it a team process.

My Atari started my nephew on his gaming journey, he was playing Pac-man and Space Invaders from the age of 4.

He is 13 now and has a PS1, PS2, GameCube, PC and a GB Advance so it looks like I started something there ;)

I think it is VERY cool that the Atari is still appealing to kids (off all ages  ) in 2004.

My oldest daughter (she's almost 7) and my oldest son (3) both like some Atari 2600 games. Getting the hang of the joystick is tough for younger kids - they take to a mouse on a PC a lot easier, in my experience. But once they figure it out, some of the easier games are great for them.

Bowling is probably the #1 game for the younger kids. Smurf Rescue is great for the 6 year old. She can finish the first level by herself now, but freaks out on the 2nd level with the birds swooping down, etc. And they all freaked out at first on the spider level - the music, gfx really are quite scary!

Other classic games? Donald Duck's Playground on the C64 (again, for the 6 year old). And though it's 16-bit, and I hate that purple dinosaur, I have to say the Barney game on the Sega Genesis is the *best* video game for getting kids into gaming. It's a platform game and the only object is to find as many prizes/friends as you can on each of 5 levels. The great thing is that you can't die, and if you leave the controls alone for a bit, Barney starts walking on his own towards the end of the level. It totally gets rid of all the frustrating things when you're little and learning. After playing that for a while, kids are much more ready for other video games. Worked with my kids, anyway!

i think that teenagers think those games are old and outdated, but they tend to think that about everything having to do with an older generation. but younger kids are more open-minded and don't have proconceptions about it, and so they can enjoy the games for what the are

My kids love our Atari VCS. It's the only game console we have in the house (They do have access to modern PC games, though). And I've learned some tricks from them (in games such as Frostbite) that I never had picked up on my own :)

Hard to say... I think most kids like the "retro" effect of the games. Just like any 18 year old kid would probably love to say, a 1973 green Oldsmobile Delta-88 Royal Sedan... sure, they'd rather have a new 05' Civic SI Hatch, but the Olds is retro and cool.

I was born in 1978. So I was RIGHT smack in the middle of it (as a child). I can remember being like 3, almost 4, watching Star Wars on HBO, on a crappy 16 inch Zenith TV with wood panelling. back in 1981. First time it hit HBO, or something like that.. and then immediatly switching on my wood panel Atari 2600 to play some Space Invaders, or Grand Prix.

I'm only 26 now, so I'm a few years past now where most "kids" stop playing games.. or at least keeping on the edge of technology. Now, I could care less.. I buy a system when it's on clearance (like, I may buy a Dreamcast or an N64 in the next couple of months).

I think MOST kids.. most at least.. see it as nothing more than a novelty. There's enough wackos out there (like us) who will keep it alive though.....

So long as they have not played too much on modern systems, kids just enjoy games period. They like the games because the games are fun.

Of course, once they get to reach their teen years, they want to play with the modern systems because that is what their friends have.

hmmm... I'm in my teen years and I would actually rather play my older systems like the 2600 and 5200 than the newer systems I have. :)

All I had was a Atari till 1998, then I got a SNES. Then a playstion, now I have almost every system ranging from Atari to PS2 and I still turn to the Atari. Some things will never grow old on me, and this is one. They call me crazy at work but oh well, we're all crazy in one way or another.
