Six Switch Vader ? Wood Grain 5200 ?!?

Recommended Posts

So my first Atari as a kid was the all black 2600 (the 'Darth Vader') but I could swear it had 6 switches not 4 ! I guess I could be remembering wrong but until I started looking this stuff up if you asked me how many switches my Atari had I would have said 'six' without thinking twice.

And my cousin swears she had a wood grain 5200 that looked identical to a 2600 heavy sixer. I remember being at her house and playing something that looked like a heavy sixer but they were always complaining that they couldn't find any games for it like we could for the 2600.

So what gives? I guess I could be wrong about the six switch Vader, but what about the wood grain 5200? Was there another version besides the 2600 and 5200? (the number 4800 comes to mind but maybe my brian just made that up, who knows, it was so long ago...)

Never was an official woodgrain 5200, they always have been black and silver. The only design variation was the 2 ports vs 4 ports.

6 switch vader is possible though. Get a Vader console, take the top shell off, pop out the 4 slots switch pan4el, take apart a 6 switch console, put the 6 switch panel on a Vader top shell, and finally put the Vader shell on a 6 switch board.

A heavy Vader is possible by this mean as well. And considering Atari tended to mix and match parts for repairs, I wouldn't be surprised if one exists.

So what do my cousin have? If it wasn't a 2600 and it wasn't a 5200 then what the heck was it !

Any idea what a six switch Vader would be worth ?

Man I wish I still had it. It was actually at my grandmothers house until a few years ago when she sold it at a church yard sell !

Yeah, that was my first thought. Your wood grain 5200 sounds more like a wood grain IntelliVision.

Sears & Roebuck released a 6-switch and 4-switch style VCS as well. I actually have a box with a bunch of loose systems, and a few of them are Sears & Roebuck systems. One is a six switch Sears (all black) and two of them are 4 switch sears systems.

I have a non working Missile Command arcade machine, and I just filled it full of Atari junk.. haha.. gotta do something with it.
