vb_master #1 Posted July 3, 2004 Yesterday, I went to the restaurant that has food and games, 'dine when you play' or something like that. I went back into the skeeball/basketball section and what did I spot? A Tux Racer cabinet! I popped in a quarter, it didn't register as me putting in a token, so I looked at the screen and I saw an NVidia splash, then the tell tale sign of X-Windows starting. X-Windows stayed up for a second, then the Tux Racer game started. I put in another quarter, and the game was on. The first screen was what character to select -- Tux or Trixie (they were not very well rendered). Second screen - level selection. The game then started, and you controlled using two black penguin 'hands'. The fish you collected were pink with rainbow stripes, I remember the original to look like real fish. Every 10 or so you collected, you got some tickets. I played each level, it had to reboot twice. Overall, I think this was a great game idea for the arcade, based on Linux. Saikyo #2 Posted July 8, 2004 Sounds like a weird (and strange idea for arcade) Bootleg. What was the cabinet like?
Adrian M #3 Posted July 8, 2004 I've been hearing more and more stories of this happening in arcades...that is, arcade ops using PC's and ROMS (and charging people to play them). Sad.
GameDork #4 Posted July 8, 2004 Was it a MAME machine?
Saikyo #5 Posted July 8, 2004 Was it a MAME machine? It probably was only running a LINUX game. Not really sure what TuxRacer is but if its a "Freeware" game then things are getting worse and worse for using illegal games for coin-op play!
pinball22 #6 Posted July 8, 2004 There's nothing illegal about it... the cabinets are being made by the people who make the game -- there's a description of them on the TuxRacer website at http://www.tuxracer.com/
Saikyo #7 Posted July 8, 2004 So that explains it a new obscure arcade game based on Linux penguins that can only be bought online. Wonder how they will respond when the ROM gets dumped?
Ralph3 #8 Posted July 9, 2004 The Nascar Store in the new St. Louis Mills Mall has one. Didn't look too much at it. Just a kids game. The controls were a little lower than a normal arcade game. No big deal to me at all.
