Kung Fu Master

Recommended Posts

I just received my cart of Kung Fu Master in the mail and played it for the first time on my Atari. I wasn't expecting much, mostly because I've only read negative things about it.

After playing for about an hour, I must say that I am really impressed! The graphics, sound/music, and control are top notch. I believe Activision did a fantastic job recreating the look and feel of the arcade game.

How does the rest of the Atari community rate this fine gem (IMO)?

I agree that it's an amazing achievement. It is strikingly similar the NES version. Heck, it's not a far cry from the arcade version!

Thanks for the responses. At least I know I'm not going crazy - I think the game is amazing for a 2600 game and that Activision should be commended for their efforts.

I guess that goes to show you that you shouldn't let one review (good or bad) make up your mind:

I'm going to have to agree with Adam King on this one... I actually bought Kung Fu Master for the 2600 when it was released and I was disappointed. The gameplay was stiff and some of the characters, especially your purple girlfriend at the end of the game, were really ugly. The NES version obviously looks better, but it also buries its 2600 counterpart in terms of control... that instant response from the controller just isn't there in the 2600 game, thanks to having to combine joystick presses with the fire button for all of the attacks.

Activision was able to squeeze a lot of performance out of the 2600 in the past, but a conversion of a game like Kung Fu Master was just asking way too much of the system.

Having played it on an emulator, I think that it's another one of these "how did they do that?" games.

Technically it has to be commended.
