Gregory DG #1 Posted July 6, 2004 Aside from Atari and compatible systems, what other systems included a joystick? Colecovision had those horrid claw-creating discs, Intellivision had it's disc, Vectrex had a tiny metallic stick I guess, NES, SMS, Genesis, SNES, and all the rest have joypads... Seems like Atari was always giving the consumer the best of the best. Nowadays, you gotta buy a separate joystick.
goatdan #2 Posted July 6, 2004 If I recall correctly... The Odyssey2 had two built-in joystick controllers. The Arcadia 2001 had the same thing. And if you want to get technical, the PSX after it got the dual shock controllers, the PS1, PS2, Xbox, N64 and GameCube all have a joystick "included." Seems like Atari was always giving the consumer the best of the best. Nowadays, you gotta buy a separate joystick. The Colecovision did have a joystick. The Intellivision doesn't really have joysticks, it's more like control pads. The Vectrex, of course, had one. The SMS controllers back in '86 had little thumbsticks you could screw in the middle of the control pad if that counts. And Atari didn't always give consumers the best of the best. 5200 controllers anyone?

JB #5 Posted July 6, 2004 And Atari didn't always give consumers the best of the best. 5200 controllers anyone? One reliability problem and the entire system is crap for the rest of eternity... 5200 sticks are great. When they work.

The fairly rare Commodore 64GS console included a joystick. Not sure if computers count, but various Commodore 8-bits had been packaged with joysticks at times - official gaming bundles and such. Though when introduced, they didn't include any controllers.
oesii #7 Posted July 6, 2004 When I first saw your post I couldn't help thinking the Lynx, NGPC, Gameboy, etc. all come with a joystick/pad
oesii #8 Posted July 6, 2004 whoops, actually read the post this time. And the NeoGeo Pocket came with a little mini-joystick, the other portables have pads.
Adrian M #9 Posted July 6, 2004 The Apple IIc may have included a joystick...I'm not 100% sure though.
ApolloBoy #10 Posted July 6, 2004 And Atari didn't always give consumers the best of the best. 5200 controllers anyone? Blasphemy! So? The 5200 controllers are widely known to be very unreliable. Most of the time you find used controllers, they usually have worn-out fire buttons, or a worn-out keypad, etc unless you buy from a seller who refurbishes their stuff. The actual system however, is great, and shouldn't be dissed just because it had horrible controllers.
Vic George 2K3 #11 Posted July 8, 2004 Too bad Commodore didn't release the 64GS in place of the Commodore 16 and Plus-4 computers that hardly anyone bought.

MacbthPSW #13 Posted July 8, 2004 Too bad Commodore didn't release the 64GS in place of the Commodore 16 and Plus-4 computers that hardly anyone bought. Yes, it may have done well if it was released to compete more directly with the NES. However, the C-16 and Plus/4 were released in '84-ish, and the 64GS not until '91 or so - quite a time gap there. The good thing about the 64GS was it sparked a second wave of C64 cartridge based games. The first games were released from '82 until '84 or '85 and were usually just 8k or 16k games. The second wave was from '91-'92 and had much larger games with bankswitching etc. maybe in the 256k range?
doubledown #14 Posted July 13, 2004 If I recall correctly... The Odyssey2 had two built-in joystick controllers. The Odyssey2's original design had attached joysticks, the second generation had removable controllers with standard 9-pin controller ports.
