Worst Ending Ever

Not the "worst", but Ninja Warriors, Again for SNES had a kinda disappointing ending

Oh man, I forgot TimeSplitters 2. Yeah, that's a ahh.. pretty classy ending, there. Considering the time travel aspects of TimeSplitters games, upon the completion of the final area and that scene you do see, they should have gone to the other time periods and showed you what's up with Harry Tipper and the Grendel MK1, how Elijah lived happily ever after, all that BS.

I don't know why TS2 had such a short and fairly crappy ending, it seems so easy to at least take what they did do and modestly expand on it, but maybe FPS programmers do not yet think FPS games 'need' involved endings, or something. Look at GoldenEye... heh. Stellar game, clearly a legend in the console FPS field, and where's the ending? Oh it's just.. a jump to a helicopter and... some dialog... and then dude kisses Natalya for five minutes while the credits scroll? plz no, thx

But I do acknowledge that ending grading is pretty subjective. Slip the right amount of Engrish and misinterpreted cool into the ending of Kid Niki the Radical Ninja and that feels pretty rewarding, eh?

(Side Note: Like spacy shooter games? Check out the Darius games - great gameplay, imaginative enemy craft design, and branching level advancement with multiple simple, but good endings put the series well above the common shooter. Series includes Darius, Darius II, Sagaia (SMS, Gen), Darius Twin (SNES), Darius Force (SNES), G. Darius (PS), Darius Gaiden (Saturn). Good stuff.)

I wasn't particularly bummed by the TS2 ending.

Though I thought the way it (incl. the ending come to think of it) was such a rip off of "Pitch Black", the Vin Diesel flick, was kind of odd...I mean the main character, shaved head and sunglasses might as well be Virtual Vin Diesel...

This is a really good topic. I laughed pretty hard remembering a lot of these that others have described. For me though...

White Men Can't Jump for the Jaguar. You spend all this time getting money to enter a "tournament," play one game and if you lose you start over and if you win you are told, "Congratulations! You are the best!" or some nonsense. Considering you have to beat about 8 different teams to be able to enter the tournament, you would think they could've at least made it into an elimination tournament with three or four rounds or SOMETHING.

I was also quite disappointed by a few of the old Beat-Em-Ups. I'm pretty sure it was the first TMNT in the arcade that when you beat it, it resets the game after the credits. I had just put in a quarter when Shredder was killed, and it left me without being able to play. I was so mad, I forgot how the game ended!

My vote for the worst ending of all time is Sword of Vermillion (Genesis) You spend forever and ever toiling through the game only to have the final battle be no more spectacular than any of the other battles, then a text box with I don't remember what in it and then that's pretty much it.

what a rip

ya, I never realized that Milon was Bomberman either, but I had guessed it from the picture before I read anybody's confirmation of it.... well, that makes me like milon all the more....

I just finished 2 games this weekend, both with craptacular endings - Donkey Kong Land and Super Double Dragon. DKL is for GameBoy, so it's somewhat forgiveable that all you get is a congrats, but you would think that Double Dragon 4 would have a decent ending seeing how DD2 was okay. Hell, I didn't even know I was fighting the final boss until the credits started rolling after I'd laid him out. A decent beat em up, but a poor effort on the ending for sure. Yeesh

You're missing quite a few titles (ie: Darius for the PC Engine CDROM circa 1989, Darius Plus, Darius Alpha, etc.) but yes, the Darius series are great games. Darius 2 and Sagaia are the same game for the Genesis, so don't pass that one up.

I say it's Monster Party for the NES. Here's the lowdown: You play a guy named Mark returning from a baseball game and a dragon named Bert asks for help. His realm has been overrun by enemies and it must be freed. Finally, when you beat the game, Bert gives you as a reward a lovely princess. But when you get back to Earth, she changes into a horrible monster. Mark (the hero) screams and then wakes up. It was all a dream! Then guess who's knocking at the door? It's Bert and the game starts all over again.

Argh! :x This game was a Mobius strip!

Done it, it's hardly the accomplishment people make it out to be.

Let's see... I probably repressed the worst ending I've ever seen, so.... the worst ending that comes to mind would be.....

Quake 2. YOU BEAT THE BOSS, ESCAPED FROM THE ASTEROID BASE, AND.... CRASH LANDED ON FUCKING STROGGOS AGAIN.

Remember the old TG-16 game, Veigues Tactical Gladiator? You went through the game only to die in the end. After defeating the final boss, the hero gets caught in a great explosion. Then we see the battered remains floating through space as sad music plays and we cut to the credits.

:x How could they do that to us?

Hey, dumb fucks who have absolutely no misery in their lives think bad endings are cool.

IF I WANTED A BAD ENDING, I COULD GET ONE FOR FREE IN REAL LIFE.

I was going to say, hands down, Baldur's Gate, but it was already mentioned by Mechanized. For reasons he stated, I can't really fault any of the programmers of the older games, as there were limitations and you could only do so much without detracting from the game play.

But Baldur's Gate...ugh. I just finished that on Sunday, and boy, did I feel violated. *spoilers* First, the main boss is nothing more than a chick in armor. No demon, no Beholder, no other kick-ass, complex creature. Second, she took literally 20-25 seconds to beat. THAT'S IT!! THEN (it gets better), she drops to her knees, confesses the error of her ways, and tells the hero to proceed. The hero proceeds into a portal "far more dangerous than where he came from," and as shadow creatures approach him, the fucking game tells you to, essentially, tune into the next game to see what he's up against. And that's the end of the game (after the credits, of course). :x *end spoilers* Man, I was pissed. Pretty good game overall, though not exceptionally difficult (you were pretty much told what to do and where to go), but fuck that ending blew.

I'm glad to hear for a fact that BG2's ending was equally bad, as I was about to buy it for the PC just to "continue" my old game. :)

Please tell me someone here has played Silent Assault for the NES? I can wiz by that game without even being touched (not very hard, really), but THAT game's ending truly had me puzzled. It didn't explain, nor reveal ANYTHING! It didn't even congratulate you.

Someone please try it out for yourselves to see what I'm talking about :!:

What a piece of shit.

To me the worst it had to be Super Mario 2 after all the hard work and the in the end they did "The Bob Newhart" thing and had Mario thinking "it was all just a dream!"

Well I think we all knew it was going to be a dream. I knew it when I was 7. I guess back then people hadn't really gotten the concept of endings. We probably shouldn't let it affect us too much.

Did you not read the manual AND the opening title screen? It was known from the very beginning that it was all a dream. What? You think they tried to surprise you? Nintendo didn't hide that fact. Besides, for an NES game that early, that was a great detailed ending.

Agreed... the way they portrayed the parade still sticks in my mind as being very nifty.

I mean, come on...it's not like Super Mario Brothers ever had a continuous backstory that made any kind of sense. Each game just pulls together a few random elements, and any continuity is just from the fact that the characters (good guys and enemies) are often similar.

LOL! I was really disappointed by that too! What was even more frustrating was all the treasure in the final level (gold, fantastic items, etc.) but no way to cash them out. I was so careful managing what I could carry, and it ended up not making a damn bit of difference anyway. :(

There is discussion that it might be possible to pass this screen at the Twin Galaxies forum if you have any interest.

Can someone post a link to that. I'd be VERY interested in seeing that.
