chrisbid #1 Posted July 8, 2004 I picked this up a couple of weeks ago, and while i think it does an admirable job of capturing the feel of the original games (its not a manic shooter like Mars Matrix or Ikaruga), i think they went over the top with the stage design. on stage 1, at one point youre flying upside down and at an angle, then you hover at that position while fighting a miniboss. it just doesnt make a ton of sense. there is also a fair amount of slowdown. on stage 3, you fight a battleship over a city. this stage has a great design, but again at one point youre flying sideways down a street, and to top it off, the framerate drops and the action slows down. this is PS2, this was a problem on the NES, it shouldnt be on current machines. but overall it a nice tribute
Saikyo #2 Posted July 8, 2004 I think the slowdown is there on purpose to give people a "Retro" feeling.
Heavy Sixer #3 Posted July 11, 2004 Good game, but I thought the level design was kind of weak. It felt like they threw together some stages just to have a game, but spent most of their time and effort on designing ships. Unlocking the ships becomes your primary focus, not blasting your way through the well-designed meat-grinder levels the previous games were known for. Also, I agree that the slowdown is an unfortunate thing. Still, for $30 it was a worthwhile purchase.
