Legality of releasing something that I used to win a contest

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Back in 1984 I offered up a text-based game I wrote for the TRS-80 and ported to the Atari 800 as a contest entry for the Star Wars Fan Club's Creativity Contest, to which I won 10th place in "Miscellaneous" (I lost to popsicle characters :P). Anyway, would it be legal to release that after 20 years?

Mike

Are both your parents lawyers or something? ;)

I think this falls under the category of "should be ok". Ok that is until George Lucas comes looking for you in the middle of the night.

You'll be able to ascertain the answer of this one by looking up the rules of the contest (if you still have them). Although some amateur contests did indeed require winning contestants to rescind the copyright to their games, most did not acquire legal title to them. It is very likely that you retain full copyright to your game and are free to publish it at will. :)

I would be amazed if they could claim copyright to it unless it was published and you signed over the copyright to them. Also you have to think is that company still around. I have given source files out but i know i retained title to copyright or the company no longer exists
