Jasoco #26 Posted July 21, 2004 That would explain why every thirty seconds some dumbass with too much bass drives by our apartment every thirty seconds. Crap! This is exactly the reason why we need to have the access to edit our own messages. I really need to proofread this stuff before I post it. Thank you for giving me my much needed laugh for today. Anyway, I am one who is against this damn trend. (Whoa.. I just spelled it Trent as well. How did I do that?) I want fun games. Not a ton of shitty gang thug shoot the guy who doesn't look like you games. Gang wars, Racism, illegal activities.. That's not fun. It's shit and the whole reason parents blame games in the first damn place! The NFS series was great. I'm sure Underground is a nice game, but it's not what I want in a NFS game! Tony Hawk was good when it was simple skateboarding. Now Tony's promoting vandalism! And GTA was fun for a while. Now, I'm just going to stay away from this topic. I won't be touching the next one. And when those ugly-ass cars made by that Scion company get into video games, that's it. I'm done. No more. I will NOT drive a Scion POS in a video game. I can't stand to drive past one of them. Die stupid Thug trend. DIE!
hex65000 #27 Posted July 21, 2004 The trend will die when the masses realize it's not all that and a basket of nachos. Until then expect a lot (more) painful hype of GTA San Andreas. Hex. And yeah they are kinda ugly but just about al the cars they are making nowadays are ugly. And as for POS I've read several reviews saying that they are good cars for the money and they have a good waranty. I don't personally like them either, but was just wondering why you hate them so much and why you grouped it in with thug. -Tim

figgler #31 Posted July 22, 2004 Thug may be a big part of the market now, but it won't be forever. Aiming all your guns at a temporary target is pretty stupid if you "ax" me. When these kids grow up and smarten up they won't be waxing nostalgic about the "good ol thug days" that's for sure. Smart companies produce timeless games, not trend themed nonsense. Remember disco, break dancing, grunge? Anyone who poured their assets into these markets was left crying in the end. Same thing's gonna happen here. Thug will die and if Midway's stupid, they'll go too.

Thug [i']will[/i] die and if Midway's stupid, they'll go too. Well, I think the best we can hope for is Thug will look as dumb as "AWESOME RADICAL RAD!" from the late 80s/early 90s...or, more likely and more subtlely, the super-dark comic books from the 80s, a trend that sold a lot of comics and doesn't look TOO too dorky, but still definately dates stuff. Scion a thugmobile, huh? I just bought the xA (not the superboxy xB); it's small, easy to park, rides high but handles very well, gets good mileage, and frankly I love the way it looks. The marketing is young but not just 'thuggish', though they're trying to co-opt the after-market-modders by selling tons of options.
Jasoco #33 Posted July 22, 2004 They're still fucking ugly as all get out. The ONLY cars that look good as a box aside from trucks (Delivery trucks.) are Jeeps. Scion has no design sense. Screw Scion. Screw then all to hell. Bah. Scion. I have to look at that shit every day I leave work. It's right outside the parking lot. Ghastly sight that is. Shannon #36 Posted August 17, 2004 Hate to dig up an old article, but I've been noticing this trend lately (especially with EA games) in a handful of games I messed with recentally. Non the less I found it annoying. Not neccesarily the presentation but the fact that so many game designers are doing this and it does tend to wear on ya. Luckily I found a breath of fresh air in beyond good and evil. Too bad this great title was overlooked.
mos6507 #37 Posted August 17, 2004 The hip hop scene has been going strong since at least the early 90s. By the time you had an act like Vanilla Ice you realized that it had gone mainstream into the white community. Vanilla Ice was the Pat Boone or Fabian of hip-hop. Unfortunately I don't see it going away anytime soon, unlike all the other passing trends in music (grunge, metal, techno pop). I've been waiting a long time for fashion to evolve to the point where the baggy pants, the inappropriate winter jackets, and the ebonics vocabulary to go out of style but it refuses to die. Pretty much any youth style looks silly when you get into your 30s and have to go to work each day for the man, casual dress or not. Where I work, there is this total weirdo who walks around with what look like Kiss platform boots. He works for the game company in our building and I just know the guy a) can't have any kids and b) could never dress like that anywhere else. The guy has to be in his late 20s at least. Also, every once and a while I'll see some goth/punks walking around looking like they stepped off the set of The Crow or Edward Scissorhands. Extreme fashion is really a luxury for the young when the only group you need approval from are your peers. The sad truth is you really have to conform to fit in with adult society norms ultimately if you want any kind of mainstream career. Those who are too in love with their hip-hop worship may wind up having to live it if they don't clean up their act ultimately, at least during work hours. I feel bad for the generation of people who are doing all the piercings and tattoos, all those permanent changes to their bodies, who won't be able to undo what they did when fashion rolls around. They are going to completely look stupid when they get older. When you get older you realize it's not as important to be stylistically different for the sake of being different. And a group of people all being different in the same way is just another kind of uniform.

What I think is funny is all the women i know who turn 30 and now decide to get a tattoo...seems like a big form of denial to me...
Brad2600 #39 Posted August 17, 2004 I know women who are only 21 and pretty much covered all over with tattoos. But then again, it's their bodies. As for "thug" behavior, it's becoming more prevalent and starting to annoy me in the process. I try to avoid internet chat rooms as much as possible and stay away from forums where people use "thug language". Ughh.

mynameistom22000 #41 Posted August 18, 2004 To add to this about the "thugging" of video-games and teen culture: I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!!! I admit, I am a high-schooler, who likes to drive fast and play video-games...but I like Atari, NES, can't stand this influx of the hip=hop culture into my town! We live in fucking suburbia, it's a bunch of rich white kids who think they are black, black kids who bitch about it even though they live in nice houses so they act blacker and then rich white kids who complain about this and then think they're "punk" because they listen to the shitty garage bands my town has instead of the shitty rap music all the rest of the kids in my school listen to..it's awful And video-game companies, marketing and movies are not helping....they promote this culture of people being able to act stupid and have no regards for others! And then older people think my generation is a bunch of dipshits, and sadly they are right. Teenagers, yes myself included, are a bunch of lemmings and will buy into the most bullshitiest ideas companies can create... Cept for me..I have it all figured out...that's why when I go past people my age and to school I blast country music Pisses em off, but I enjoy it...along with my cheap jeans and tee-shirts bought on sale at wherever...Don't buy into bullshit kids..it makes you look dumber than you actually are

Some people buy into images, while others see the usefulness in a vehicle and the cost-effectiveness. Well, you don't buy a nifty little car like the tC just for the "usefulness and cost-effectiveness"--I mean, you could get both those things, plus Toyota's/Scion reliabilty reputation, from like a Toyota Echo for a lot less. You're buying into the look and feel and moonroof features, and I admit it looks like it's a terrific and fun car for the price. Actually I don't think Scion's marketing has been all that great. But their design has really scratched some niches, so to speak.
mos6507 #45 Posted August 21, 2004 Ehh, both piercings and tattoos are only semi-permanent these days. What about people who chop their tongues in half like a snake? That seems pretty permanent to me. And tattoo removal really just replaces the tattoo with a big-ass scar.
mos6507 #46 Posted August 21, 2004 Did he just say that metal was a fad? Clearly this man listens to too much Kenny Rogers Genres of music never completely die. They just fade away as they, no matter what you do, get locked into the generation in which they originated. When we talk about genres being dead we are talking about what's hot to the main music demographic, which is 16-25. Those are a fickle bunch. The industry doesn't get excited about us balding GenX-ers going to see Judas Priest or Sabbath reunions at Ozzfest do their greatest hits things. These acts aren't selling CDs anymore because we already bought them years ago and they have very little new to say as artists (like it or not). What passes for metal on the charts is rap-rock or power-punk-pop. The closest thing left on the charts is Velvet Revolver and that became a hit against all industry predictions.
