MasterMotorola #1 Posted July 17, 2004 Hello everyone! I want to get my TT connected to an ADSL modem so I would like to hear from anyone who has an ethernet adaptor on their Atari computer. I am not sure which of these two devices to purchase... ROM-Port Ethernet Link by Elmar Hilgart (http://hardware.atari.org/ether/index.htm) EtherNEC by Lyndon Amsdon (http://hardware.atari.org/ether/index.htm) Could anyone comment on: - driver software and applications (compatibility, best range, updates?) - ease of installation - price - any problems - anything else? I know there's not much room inside the original TT case but I'd like to fit the unit inside with an RJ-45 entering the back through a custom hole and run a long ribbon cable to cartridge port. Call me crazy but I have too many external peripherals as it is. I look forward to hearing from everyone. Thank you, Steve
krupkaj #2 Posted July 24, 2004 I am using EtherNEC with my TT without trouble. I am running MiNT-net and have it connected through the router to catv internet. But my friend is not able to make it running with his TT. It writes MAC addres during driver initialization but then losts lot of packets and it is unstable. So it depend on your TT. I think it worth to try it. There is chance it will work for you. I am not sure it fit inside TT case. In case you have empty VME bay it shoud fit into it. but you must solve connection to ROM port with ribbon cable. It should be as short as possible. krupkaj #3 Posted July 24, 2004 BTW I saw your profile photo. Is in the picture your TT? it looks very dark. Did you paint it some way?
MasterMotorola #4 Posted July 25, 2004 Jan, Thanks for the information. I've already sent an e-mail to Lyndon Amsdon about the EtherNEC. You say that the ribbon cable should be short. This was something I was concerned about; it may need to be long (15-20 cm) just to reach the VME area but I know that this increases the resistance in the wires. The VME bay is currently empty (unless someone has a graphics card they will sell) so I plan to cut a hole in the back plate for the RJ-45 jack and mount the device inside my case. You can see why I don't want many external peripherals or a recased machine... it just looks very sleek and beautiful in black. I call it "NoirTT" . I bought a 17" LCD monitor for it earlier in the year and decided to paint the whole unit a matching black colour. I will try again to post photographs of it. - Steve
krupkaj #5 Posted July 26, 2004 I saw Falcon fith Ethernec with very long ribbon cable which worked. But generaly it should be short, especialy with this case as it is connected directly to bus. 15 cm should be ok. Just try it and you will see. I like the design of TT very much. and your black version is very beautiful
