PM sent.

I'm sure there are a lot of other people interested in the same

answers, certainly I am. I want to get more games, and I want

to track down a couple of controllers, without breaking the bank!

If you know something, or can give hints, please spill the beans! :-)

Cheers,

JustClaws.

I'd suggest the N501 if you are going to get one. Between a better VLM and MP3 and VCD support and all that fun stuff, it had the best features. Both my parents and I own one of these.

Mine stopped playing a lot of DVDs recently, so it has been put off to the side and I got an Xbox to take over the DVD playing capibilities. My parents on the other hand works perfectly, and has been around about two years longer than the one I had.

If I wanted another NUON, I would totally go for the N501 again.

Hello,

I'd suggest the N501 if you are going to get one. Between a better VLM and MP3 and VCD support and all that fun stuff' date=' it had the best features. Both my parents and I own one of these.[/quote']

I think it's not got the highest resolution VLM though of the USA ones has it, wasn't that the Samsung N2000? However, the Samsung N501 has many more patterns?

The Toshiba player (model #?) was sadly crippled with a very restricted VLM feature as well, was it not, and neither the Toshiba nor the original Samsung N2000 can play CD-R media. (Could the drive on these units not be replaced with a compatible replacement drive - I imagine that if these are repaired, a compatible part would be available, it might resolve that?)

I think technically the ultimate NUON player technically is the Samsung N504. The Samsung N504 (like the Samsung N505, but not the Samsung N501, and released only in Switzerland and hunted down by NUON fans all over Europe) has the faster Aries 3 chip in it, more VLM patterns, controller ports (very sadly missing on the N505), and the extra VLM control features through the joystick Jeff added for Europe. It is also apparently region free, although I cannot verify that. I think the N505 is identical in features to the N504, with the exception of no joystick ports.

If I wanted another NUON' date=' I would totally go for the N501 again.[/quote']I'd certainly like an N501 for game development purposes, because the Samsung infra-red controller is incredibly fussy about the angle at which the control is aimed at the DVD player. In fact, it seems to be about 5%... no chance of the controls being hijacked by another person in the room with a universal remote control! This fussy remote compatibility means it's a pain to play with even Ballistic. :-(

Anyway, your mileage may vary!

Cheers,

JustClaws.

I had Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp and at least one other "DVD Game" and they actually work quite well on NUON because you can use the game controller instead of the remote. Since the NUON game controllers map out to corresponding buttons on the remote, it works great!

Unfortunately it didn't improve the lag between scenes on Dragon's Lair (basically it plays one track of video, you hit the right button on the controller, then it loads the next track), but that's just in the nature of the way the games work.

Any chance you can say, having all the games, which games work

OK with the remote control only, and which work only with a joypad?

I asked this question on the NUON-Dome forum ages ago, no reply. :-(

It would be really useful to know for those of us with unhacked N505's!

For testing sake, please remove the joypad totally before playing! :-)

Cheers,

I know for a fact that SIXL, Tempest 3k, Ballistic, Merlin Racing and Freefall will all work with a remote (as the manual even has instructions for playing the games with the remote). I've tried it and I DO NOT recommend it at all. Response time is slow and the whole experience is just miserable.

I've never tried the remote on Next Tetris or Iron Soldier 3, but I suspect they will all work. I can check tonight. Next Tetris never came with an instruction manual (Toshiba just mailed them out in an envelope), but I'll check through my IS3 manual anyway to see if they also included remote controller instructions.

Why a white case for Tempest 3000, and do you have two copies of IS3?

Personally, I think that Ballistic is playable with the remote. Not great, but playable. Space Invaders comes close, but stinks as a game and I wouldn't reccommend it...

The white case for Tempest was necessary as I needed to swap out the original gold one due to a partially broken center spindle. I have an extra shrinkwrapped copy of Tempest which is not in the pic.

And yes, at the time this pic was taken, I had several copies of IS3. How did I get them? One was the Nuon-dome freebie. 2 were from a side deal with someone from digital press when I bought my Next Tetris. The complete copy was shrinkwrapped and acquired from eBay. I've since sold off all but the complete copy to hungry Nuon fans! :)

The other odd fact about my collection is that I purchased almost all of my games from BEST BUY in 2001! In fact, I still have the receipts for them. Each title retailed for $19.99 - $29.99 and were always just left out over in the DVD section near the NUON DVD players. They used to get the games in at or around release and also stocked a selection of Logitech controllers.

The only games I did not purchase from a Best Buy were:

*IS3

*Next Tetris

(Ballistic came with my NUON system which I also purchased at Best Buy! :) )

Same here. The local Best Buys had a TON of copies of Space Invaders XL for some reason, but none of Freefall which took me forever to find. I never had the desire to search out the Next Tetris, although I would like to try out IS3 someday...

Any good? Better / worse than the PSX version?

As difficult as it was for me to find the Next Tetris (about 5 months of looking on and off), it's sort of a letdown when you actually play it. For one, when you boot it up, you get the same intro and interface as the demo discs (complete with some early demos and movies of aMaze and the "making of Riven", etc) but the actual game is kind of blah. And, it takes FOREVER to boot up for some reason.

although I would like to try out IS3 someday. Any good? Better / worse than the PSX version?

I've not played the PSX version of IS3 (though I heard it came out BEFORE the Nuon version), but the Nuon version is fantastic. One of my favorite mech games on any platform even. There are LOTS of missions and the cinemas are all top notch and high quality, like the ones in Freefall. Graphically, in-game the title resembles a Playstation game with its low-res display and "jiggly" polygons. I would imagine that the textures are improved along with better fire effects, but the game is a blast to play and it's just plain fun to experiment with the various weapons. Physics are pretty good (check out just how far you can lob those grenades! :) ) and there are 2 ways to go about the main game: (a.) Mission mode similar to the Jag versions...the standard escort, defend and blow such and such up. or (b) Arcade mode where all you do is go through each stage and destroy every single structure to clear a level. I really enjoy the Arcade mode myself as I don't much care for the escort missions.

Multiplayer is where the freeze bugs show up. It works, but be careful.

Update and some minor corrections:

*SIXL's manual does not have detailed instructions on how to play the game using the remote. You can still play it that way, but this is a change from the previous games.

*Iron Soldier 3 --- no instructions whatsoever listed in the manual on using the remote. I've also tried to start up and play the game using nothing but the Samsung N2000 remote. No luck...I can't even bypass the title screens. You seemingly need a controller to play the game.

*The NEXT TETRIS --- Yes. I just played and and can confirm that the game IS playable via remote. The control stick is used to move. Buttons 1 and 3 on the remote allow you to rotate pieces. Works rather well I might add! :)

So there you have it. Unless I'm missing something, it appears that the only game NOT PLAYABLE via remote control is IRON SOLDIER 3.

Cool, if you can afford a copy of IS3, you can afford a nuon with control ports too :P.

Carl,

Did you ever have any success tracking down any NUON devkits?

I've been in touch with a couple of ex-developers, but had no luck.

(In fact, only one replied to me, I guess they're tired of enquiries.)

I guess there's no change to the situation on lost NUON titles either?

I'm still looking for a nice N501 if I can't track down an N504 or devkit.

I think you're kind of busy right now though aren't you, with other

new projects... but when you wife has that sorted ;-) let me know...

Cheers,

JustClaws.
