RavenonesGF #1 Posted July 26, 2004 Ok, so this may be a dumb question but I bought a sega genisis and a Segs Cd today for $8 and I'm having trouble hooking it up. Exactly how do you hook up a sega 2 with a Sega CD 2. I'm think I have everything right and it might be just dead but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know the sega works but I want to get the Sega CD to work. Thanks
Kialan #2 Posted July 26, 2004 Well you slide em both together first of course. I'm sure that was obvious, Each needs their own power supply. Use either an RF cable or composite cable to hook up the genesis to the TV. With the 2nd model genesis you get stereo sound automatically, unlike the first. No need for extra cables. Power on the genesis. Have no carts inserted. The sega cd should power on, and you get its title screen (with theme music which is stuck in my head now than you very much) Try out an audio cd first to see if it works. Then if everything is ok (never know if the thing is broken and it scratches cds) try a sega cd game. You can only play cartridges by turning the unit off, insert, then on again. It's pretty easy. You don't need the metal plates that original came with it to get it to work. If you are having a problem please describe it I'll do my best to help. I've got a model 1 genesis, model 1 sega cd, model 2 gen, and model 2 cd. I can explain the 32x too if you need me to.
Nukey Shay #3 Posted July 26, 2004 The connection between the two sucks bad...prone to corrosion and all that good stuff. Try cleaning both of them before you put it together.

Try cleaning both of them before you put it together. Also try the classic "take it apart, stick it back together, wiggle it around a bit" maneuver. Had to do that with my Gen2/SCD2 combo on more than one occasion.
RavenonesGF #5 Posted July 26, 2004 Thanks for all the help. I did have it hooked up right. THe Genisis powers on the CD does like nothing. I'm going to try a different power supply when I get home maybe that'll do it and I'll try cleaning the connections. Is there anyway to tell if the Cd is just really dead and unfixable? I'm pretty good at fixing just about anything and would love to get it working becuase my boyfriend was so excited when we found it. Any help would be great. A poorly seated one acts just like a dead one in my experience.
RavenonesGF #7 Posted July 26, 2004 What do you mean by a poorly seated one? Also is there a way to clean the contacts on the CD? I know I probably sound dumb but I just recently got back into the whole video game scene. I never owned a CD when I was younger so this is all new to me. As for the 32X we picked up two of those today too and the one came with the connector cord that goes from the CDX to the genisis and the other din't does anyone know where I can get one of those? Thanks for all the help guys.
JB #8 Posted July 26, 2004 What do you mean by a poorly seated one? One that isn't making proper connection with the deck.
Nukey Shay #9 Posted July 26, 2004 Yep...it can be due to even a single pin on the edge connecter not making contact with the board (due to corrosion or a bent pin). Take a look at the pins to see if any appear to be mis-aligned...and clean off the connections as best you can (on both the pins and the circuit board). There's also a bit of "play" when connecting the two...so you might need to work at it a few times.

Thanks for all the help guys. Definitely try cleaning the genesis expansion port connectors with alcohol. I actually found that the pins on my genesis, which had never been used before with expansions, were fairly dirty. As for the 32x I don't know where you can buy that cable...shouldn't be too hard, as it is essential and people wouldn't just throw em out. Try searching around the net. I checked sega-parts for you but they didn't have it. When you hook up the 32x you plug that particular cable in the genesis, then to the AV-In of the 32x. Then you plug some form of AV to the AV-Out on the 32x to your tv. You need a power supply for the 32x, too. All this hooked up at once looks so cool, and jumbled, and insane! RavenonesGF #11 Posted July 26, 2004 Yea I'm gonna try some of the stuff you guy recommended. I know all of it hooked together looks insane. I know alot of people think I'm crazy with being a girl and having more video game stuff than a majority of the population of guys but oh well I like and my boyfriend doesn't seem to mind until I surpass his collection. But I'm open to more suggestions if anyone has any.

jr2084 #13 Posted July 26, 2004 I just have to add one thing: Do not use an AC power adapter for the sega cd!!!! I did this 3 times accidentally and fried all 3 sega cds. Only use a DC power supply.
RavenOne #14 Posted July 26, 2004 Baby, your collection will never surpass mine, not a chance... I don't think .... umm .. well .... I can still kick your ass in kaboom .. luffz

RavenonesGF #20 Posted July 26, 2004 Ok one more question. If I plug the power supply into the CD without the genisis hooked up should I see the access light go on to know its getting power or does that light only go on when the genisis is up and running? Furthermore, only if the Genesis is up, running, dones't have a cart in it, and is making proper contact with the SegaCD. Yes, it's a pain in the ass. RavenonesGF #24 Posted July 26, 2004 Since we're on the subject of sega, I guess I'll ask another sega related question. The power on one of my genisises (or however it is spelled when its plural) is loose. You have to play with the plug for it to get power. I heard that to fix this you need to resouder the power on the mother board. I took it apart but can't tell exactly where this needs to be done. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Oh yea and stil no luck with the CD.
gdement #25 Posted July 27, 2004 I used to have a front-loader CD, it died on me twice. The first time it was under warranty, and I had it repaired. I don't know what the specific problem turned out to be or how it was fixed. A couple years later it died again, so I replaced it with a top-loader from Funcoland. These repeated total-death incidents made me wonder if it might be a design flaw, but that was with the front-loader. I don't know if top loaders have the same problem.
