Speculate: Why No Dang Nintendo Puzzle Compilation?

Recommended Posts

So i decided to do the GameSpy survey...they mentioned Nintendo Puzzle Collection / Compilation. That's the only indication I've seen of a stateside release...does anyone know? I'm so sick of lugging my (well, small) SNES to my bud's just for Tetris Attack...why don't they release it, get a bit of money, and call it a day?

'Course I'd be happier if it were Tetris Attack rather than Panel de Pon, but still...I'd love to see a four player version of this.

Any other hints of it coming here? And if not, why not, and why so long a delay?

Easy, nintendo never really made any puzzle games, third party compenies did, so Nintendo would have to get rights to the games agian. Tetris attack may use nintendo characters, but it is Tetris*, so nintendo would have to buy the rights to tetris agian, something they probably dont want to do.

*well, it uses the name, therefore it is technaclly (I know, I know) tetris.

Well, that doesn't explain why it's out in Japan, scheduled for the EU, but not here...

That also doesn't explain why it was released as Pokemon Puzzle League as well.

Hmm, I did not know that. Maybe you should import?

I think it we just have to wait a bit longer, you know, until the retro GBA SP thing runs out. I don't think that they'd release two such things so close together. Either that or we're never going to get it because Nintendo hates us.

PPL doesn't, but Tetris Attack does. Which is what he was referring to.

Tetris Attack IMHO has nothing to do with Tetris. Who was it actually made by? They only slapped the Tetris name on it and Yoshi's Island characters to get people to buy it. And it worked, because it's damn addictive.

Still, I'd kill to get a GBA compilation with Tetris, Tetris Attack and Dr. Mario on it. But even more if it had more than three games.

I think it has always been a Nintendo product, but the Panel de Pon fairies would have branded it a girl's game here in a millisecond.

I think they licensed the game Nintendo as a generic indicator of "action puzzler with blocks"

Tetris Attacks really works well because of the amazing seesaw effect; many games have garbage blocks, but few games (maybe that street fighter one is another exception) have figured out how to make it so the garbage blocks can sometimes be turned to your tremendous advantage. That's why it's a MUCH better game than Kirby's Avalanche / Mean Bean Machine / whatever else it's called.

Agreed. TA is awesome as all get out.

T & A are too, but that's another thing altogether.. ;)

I have the Super GB version of TA, as do I have the original Tetris. But with the new Japanese release of the original NES Dr. Mario, I really want to see TA and Tetris come to the GBA on a GBA cart. Only to have full color, a bigger screen and no cartridge sticking out of the bottom. I guess if it never happens, I still have the GB versions. But with the release of the DS, I am totally wanting to only play GBA games from now on, so it'd be a nice thing to have GBA versions of them.

(Yeah, I know about those emulators, and cards and such, but until the software is made Mac OS X compatible, screw them.)

No, but it is the same game as Tetris Attack. If it were a license issue they couldn't have done that. More likely is they own the game called TA but not the rights to the name, and thus were able to release it as PPL.

Yeah, the reason for PPL was probably somewhere between not owning the name "Tetris" and wanting to cash in on the franchise...not sure where the balance is for that exactly.

Still, just rename the sucker to "Yoshi's Block Attack" or something. It's probably my favorite version...PdP is a bit too fruity, and PPL had more and better sounds, but I really missed the animated avitars TA had...
