Adrian M #1 Posted August 2, 2004 Call me crazy, but I remember reading (about a year ago) about Nintendo's intentions to release demo discs on a consistent basis...either monthly or quarterly. Well, they did release that trial companion disc which I got for free with my GC system purchase last July, which included demos of Splinter Cell, Soul Calibur II, Billy Hatcher, etc. So what happened to this plan? The thought just crossed my mind over the weekend loading up the new OXM disc...are they releasing them to Nintendo Power subscribers, or did they scrap the plans, or did I just read an incorrect report last year? SteveW #2 Posted August 2, 2004 I'm just wondering if it might be the way stores handled the last demo disc release that might keep them from putting out more. Best Buy, until recently, had them in their GC racks for $40! And they're the nation's largest electronics retail chain. I saw them marked for sale at a lot of different stores, even though they were clearly labeled on the back not for retail sale. They might just stick to demo discs as special promos included with other games, like Pac-Man World 2 having Pac-Man Vs. with it.

Yeah, Best Buy did go kind of overboard on those discs when you could just walk into CompUSA and buy the same preview disc for $9.99 (which many still have in stock). I just thought they were going to start bundling something with the NP mags similar to what the OXM and PS2 mags do. I bring this up merely because I don't rent games and I do buy many of my games based on if I really particularly enjoy a demo version of it.

Adrian M #5 Posted August 2, 2004 But where are the demos? Just out of curiosity, does anyone else remember reading or hearing anything about Nintendo and demos? I KNOW I read it somewhere...where I can't recall though.
SteveW #6 Posted August 2, 2004 After the way Circuit City bungled their $5 videogame sale a few weeks ago, they can kiss my hairy butt. I won't go in there again.
Adrian M #7 Posted August 2, 2004 After the way Circuit City bungled their $5 videogame sale a few weeks ago, they can kiss my hairy butt. I won't go in there again. I agree with you. The CC stores in my area are run by a bunch of fraternity monkies who eat their fast food lunches in front of customers and could care less about the place, which is one of the main reasons why I steer clear of those wretched stores. Now, Best Buy is also run primarily by fraternity monkies, but the majority of them are usually just roaming around in the TV section and stay out of your way for the most part. Jasoco #8 Posted August 2, 2004 I wish they would release Demo discs like Sony and Microsoft. It's not fair. They should also offer them in NP as well as the stores. I had to get the "Preview Disc" for $5 from CC. If they would keep doing that, especially if they offered more downloadable NES games on them like the Dr. Mario download from that disc, it would rock. But it sucks. I WANT DEMOS OF NINTENDO GAMES! SteveW #9 Posted August 2, 2004 There's a British magazine called Cube that has two cover discs on it every issue. They can be picked up at Barnes & Noble stores. But the issue I bought last, one disc was for DVD video players only, and the other was games so lame that I never even tried playing them. I don't know if they would work on an American GameCube anyway.

The only thing I go there for is clearance stuff. I still stay away from them because of the DIVX fiasco.

+kisrael #13 Posted August 3, 2004 So, how WERE the damn demo discs supposed to be released? I'd say it's generally worth 10-20 bucks, they should treat them like any other discount game, not do all this "not for retail sale" crap...

I get Nintendo Power cause of the Zelda disc offer and it's the biggest waste of trees I've ever seen. I couldn't give a shit about Pokemon or the Gameboy Advance so the magazine is worthless to me. Last issue they only reviewed three GC games. I don't care about demo discs just a good GC mag would be nice.

There are a bunch of Euro mags like "CUBE" that bookstores like Barnes & Noble carry. Just be prepared to pay more than $10 for them.
liveinabin #17 Posted August 4, 2004 The discs on Cube magazine are both non-playable. One is a video DVD (albeit a 3 inch disc) and the other is generally either more video or cheats. I don't believe we've had any demos for GC that US hasn't had. Oh yeah, can you buy Nintendo Power in any magazine store in US, or is it subscription only? Reason I ask is that there's an ad. for SD Gundam Force for PS2 and GBA in the next issue. I did all the artwork and layout for it and I'd quite like to get a copy (my first proper published work outside AA)

video game addict #19 Posted August 4, 2004 So, how WERE the damn demo discs supposed to be released? I'd say it's generally worth 10-20 bucks, they should treat them like any other discount game, not do all this "not for retail sale" crap... The last one that came out, which is what was still in some CC stores until recently, was a NFRS version, that was suppose to be given away with purchase of the Gamecube. Places like BB put those $40 price tags on them to keep from selling.. like who's gonna spend $40 on a demo? They were suppose to just be giving them away with every system purchase. But alot of the people who work there, don't know how it's done & alot never get given away with the systems, they just sit around at the $40 price. TRU & CC both made the disc available for $9.99 at the same time it was $40 from BB. Then it got marked down at CC recently to $5 if there were any left. I was too busy buying actual games. But that's like the only demo disc that's come out isn't it? Not counting freebies with preorders.. I've got a little stack of PS2 demos, some I picked up from stores, some were just pack-ins with mail order.. And then there's them Jampacks, & X-box has something similar, that's sold in retail stores. Plus the demos that come with magazine subs for both X-box & PS2, it's a shame the Nintendo doesn't follow suit.
figgler #20 Posted August 4, 2004 Speaking of demos - this is a really big deal. Just secured my copy moments ago. http://www.nintendopower.com/metroidprime2/
drexel923 #21 Posted August 8, 2004 I also wish that they would release more demo discs. Even if the majority of it is 3rd party games like the last one, I would be happy. Usually I know that Nintendo games will be good, but having the opportunity to try out some 3rd Party exclusives/releases for the Cube would help me decide on what to buy. +kisrael #22 Posted August 8, 2004 I really don't understand the logic in like limited release demos... I mean, giving them away with a system...the buyer is going to be buying some new games already, probalby ones they've already heard of, not these new games...you'd think the target market would be people who already have a game library, try to get them interested in the new stuff... Exactly! I wish it was that way, but we all know Nintendo likes to do things their own way. And they also know big fans like me will buy another year of Nintendo Power just to get a demo disc.
