rockman_x_2002 #2 Posted August 3, 2004 Well there is this one game called "Sack of Flour, Heart of Gold." But even that's no longer being updated. Past that I have never heard of many NES homebrew games.
~llama #3 Posted August 4, 2004 i'm trying to get into it, but its really quite a complicated little beast to program for... the main hub of the small NES homebrew scene is here, with a message board and most of the tools you need to get started... the lack of a good toolset for NES development is mind-boggling... most people end up writing their own tools to develop their games with because the publicly available tile and map making tools arent really great. what about gameboy homebrew? i would love to get into this scene (original gameboy, not GBA) but there arent any good tutorials... i have a game design and im working on sprite and level graphics but have no idea how to program the thing... perhaps we (those of us who are interested but confused) should start a collective of NES programmers/artists (kinda like XYPE maybe? only working on the same project(s)) and work together to try to learn how to make a good homebrew? or the same thing for gameboy... sorry if i just hijacked this thread
20eyes #4 Posted August 4, 2004 Sounds like a good idea. It would certainly be easier to figure things out if there were a collective location to go to.

~llama #7 Posted August 4, 2004 well the NESDev site i gave a link to is pretty comprehensive in terms o f the information thats available... i was just thinking in terms of a collective of programmers working on projects together (does XYPE do this or are they just a collective in name, releasing all their work on the XYPE label but not working together?) so that its not quite as overwhelming as it would be for a lone programmer... to be honest this thread should probably be moved to the homebrew programming forum, or at least continued there... are you more interested in NES programming or Gameboy? because ive really started to build more interest in gameboy as of late and if i were to try to start a group of the kind im talking about here it would probably be for gameboy rather than NES... anybody here know anything about Gameboy homebrew? Classic Pac #9 Posted August 5, 2004 Oh sure there are places such as nesdev where you can get good homebrews. But check out www.theoldcomputer.com nes rom section. Look for Kart Fighter and Somario two of the best nes homebrews out there. There is also a homebrew of super mario world that someone sent me WOW! Maybe that should be a three way tie for first place.

Jess Ragan #11 Posted August 6, 2004 I thought the term "pirate" specifically meant the unlawful use of source code from other games. I tend to doubt that the designers of Somari and Kart Fighter took any significant amount of source code from legitimately released NES games. I think it would be more appropriate to use the term "unlicensed" to describe these games. JR
