Adrian M #1 Posted August 4, 2004 Firstly, this is NOT a thread intended to generate flames. I am merely expressing my disappointment regarding these latest revelations: http://www.shenmue-online.com/ A Shenmue MMORPG? Dear Lord, Noooooooooooooo!!! Why? Why?? Finish the third and final game of the series first before embarking on such an outlandish format. I mean, it's not like the series was all that popular to begin with, so who will possibly take interest in this as a MMORPG and pay the monthly fees associated with it? And to add to the travesty, Ryo and company are shown throwing....fireballs? What is this, Street Fighter II all of a sudden? Somehow I think Yu Suzuki is contemplating suicide at the very thought of his series going this route. Yeah, yeah...I understand why the game is being done this way (mainly a product intended for the Far East as well as a means to control piracy), but this just still seems wrong, particularly how the storyline (with the main series) is basically unfinished. As if I've needed yet another reason to despise Sega. Sound off with your thoughts and opinions.
GrizzLee #2 Posted August 4, 2004 Is it strictly on-line like Phantasy Star? If so, I'm through with the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st 2.
Adrian M #3 Posted August 4, 2004 Is it strictly on-line like Phantasy Star? If so, I'm through with the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st 2. Details are still somewhat sketchy, but yes, it does appear that the majority of the game is to be utilized online (MMORPG style). Kind of a huge letdown for those of us who were interested by the series ever since it surfaced as Project Berekely back in the Saturn days. Perhaps there will still be a Shenmue 3 as this isn't being developed entirely by Sega. But yes, I can sympathize with you...particularly after how long we've waited since finishing part 2. ubersaurus #4 Posted August 4, 2004 How the hell would it work MMO anyway? There's only 1 Ryo, and I don't think anyone wants to play random japanese people.
liveinabin #5 Posted August 4, 2004 I do! I'd wander around the server, saying "I'm sorry, I've been too tired lately" to absolutely everybody
Adrian M #6 Posted August 4, 2004 How the hell would it work MMO anyway? There's only 1 Ryo, and I don't think anyone wants to play random japanese people. That's why I'm puzzled as well. What will the game consist of anyway? The renders so far indicate that it will most likely take place in Hong Kong (a la Shenmue 2), which is a larger environment but IMO, fewer "friendly" characters. I can see it now....hundreds of Ryo and Ren characters and an occassional Kongo and roaming around the South Carmain Quarter while being constantly assaulted by hoards of generic bad guys who are associated with Dou Niu. The Shenmue environments are vast and sprawling, but my feeling is that they will not lend themselves well to a MMORPG given the fact that the series already has a somewhat solid storyline from the previous 2 games. I can hardly wait for the opportunity to run my own Bar, foodstand, or Tomato Convenience Store.

This is not what Shenmue is about. This is just retart-o. I can hardly wait for the opportunity to run my own Bar... Can I be your girl standing outside trying to draw everyone in for a drink? +kisrael #10 Posted August 4, 2004 I don't really know the original game that well, and come to think of it haven't played a MMORPG, but I modded up the guy on slashdot who said Even Miyamoto couldn't have thought up the concept of putting together the boringness of Shenmue with the tedium of MMORPGs. This will be a legendary game if the universe doesn't implode from the combination. 'cause I thought it was pretty funny...
Saikyo #11 Posted August 4, 2004 OK I'll admit I have never played a Shenmue game in my life. But after reading this thread it does seem like a rather rash move for them to make. I can see it now, Player Ryo1 "Stop I am teh real Ryo!" Player Ryo2 "LMAO! Joo R not teh Reeal Ryo Cuz I am 1337 Haw Haw! Haw LOLOLOLOLO!!!111!". Oh man it would be an absolute nightmare!
