Caution: Playing Atari may be hazardous to your health

Recommended Posts

I just about pulled a muscle in my arm playing Decathlon. By the time I did the 1500m dash, I had to stop and take a nap. Who's idea was it to make this game so physically draining? I'd get less of a work out doing the actual Decathlon! Sheesh.

Not only that, but I think I need a new controller now. Has anybody ruined a joystick playing this game. I mean its fun and all, but should you have to have an extra controller just for Decathlon?

Ouch

I can remember playing a game which had some sort of running event. Usually the faster you moved the joystick, the faster the player would run. I think the game was Summer Olympics. Anyway, it tended to ruin the joysticks because of all the work needed.

I eventually bought some joysticks from a company called Wico I think. They were great since they were small and players moved at super human speed. Only problem was that a player's skin would form calluses if they played too much because of the constant movement.

They should have used some other sort of method for moving the player.

The conventional wisdom is that you should use the Track & Field controller (from Atari's Track & Field game). Another button-based joystick replacement like the Starplex Deluxe should have the same effect.

According to AtariAge's Decathlon tips, paddle controllers can be used during the running events.

So do you have to swap them in between events? How do you do that. Please, I'm addicted to this game, but can't go through joysticks like candy.

I've never played the game, but that seems to be the idea. Just unplug the joystick and plug in the paddles, or vice versa. You could also use some sort of Y-cable or similar device that allows more than one controller unit to be plugged into a single port at a time.

Thanks, skatepunk! I really didn't think anybody paid attention to those. I do it mostly to amuse myself, but I'm glad you get a kick out of them too! hee hee! I'll try to keep them fresh and entertaining!

I think if you are getting physically drained by playing a video game then you should put down the controller, head to the gym for some weight lifting, then go back to playing decathlon. You will look and feel better and wont get so drained from Atari.
