Noob Question: MAME or MESS for 2600/5200 Emu ???

I would like to know whether I should use MAME or MESS for Atari 2600/5200 Emulation ???

 

It looks like MAME does gaming consoles (Arcade Games) and MESS does more of a home game-box kinda thing ...

 

Am I way off base ?

That is correct. MESS is for 5200 and 7800 (and other home systems).

For the 2600 I suggest using either z26 or the new version of Stella (1.4). For the 5200, I suggest using Atari800WinPlus, Virtual Super System (VSS) or Jum52. You can find each of these emulators as follows:
