Best Atari Game Ever

Recommended Posts

Which Atari game Do you feel is the Best game ever. Best graphics, game play story line and easy to understand. (excluding the jaguar and the lynx cause they have an unfair advantage in the graphic dept)

this poll includes 2600,5200,7800 and 8 bit.

Here i would say without a doubt BLUE MAX for 8 bit. best story line rolling 3D graphics and easy to understand what you are to do . and the ranking system even when you do beat the game has you coming back for more

what about you

I am kind of partial to the 7800 version of Ms. Pac-Man since it is easy to understand, has pretty good graphics and contains the little cut scenes similar to the arcade version.

I also enjoyed Behind Jaggi Lines for the Atari 8-bit although it would not quality as simple to understand. Nor would Ultima III, another one of my favorites from the Atari 8-Bit computer.

The game that everyone seems to like graphically for the Atari 8-Bit was Altered Reality. I never got to play it but I have seen still images of it and from what I saw, it looked great.

Asterix,

Brick Kick,

Dragonfire and

Raiders of the Lost Arc.

These are the best ever for me.

I'm new here, but am going to jump in with my response to this. I have always felt that the single best video game ever written on ANY system, before or since, is Star Raiders on the 8-bit computers.

Even all these years later, it's still my favorite game.

On the 2600, I have a few favorites (in no particular order):

Adventure

Superman

Space Invaders

and the Star Raiders "clones":

- Starmaster

- Star Raiders (2600)

- Phaser Patrol

- Solaris

- Star Voyager (although this one is nowhere near as good as the others)

I'm in the process of putting up a new classic games section on my website and one of the first things I'm working on is a review/comparison of those Star Raiders "clones". I'll post again when it's ready.

Solaris, easily. It's the most complex and best designed game ever released for the 2600. I'm also partial to Midnight Magic, Crystal Castles, Ms. Pac-Man, and Yar's Revenge.

As for the 5200, I really liked Wizard of Wor and Mountain King when I was a kid. Moon Patrol also seemed a lot faster and more intense than the other versions of the game I'd played way back then.

The 7800... ugh. Tower Toppler, I guess. I was never a fan of this one, but Tower Toppler was really impressive, I'll admit.

There are too many good simple fun games for the 2600/5200 to name any one as the best. If I had to pick one game I keep going back to play all the time....It's Missle Command. The 2600 version, 5200, and yes even the Jaguar version.

There are 3 games that I never get bored with

Spider-man

Zaxxon (I know the graphics suck)

Crystal Castles

I used to play Mr. DO! ALL the time.

But over all of these, I must put Pitfall II at the very top. It is the best.

I will never get sick of River Raid and Video Pinball on the 2600. My mom always has to yank me off the Atari so I can eat dinner... I'm sure many of you guys remeber that kind of thing when you were kids, and I'm still a kid, and I'm still under the rule of my mother and father.

It got so bad when I was a kid, my mom started letting me eat in my room because I would come to dinner all pissed off I had to stop playing Atari. Of course, my parents understood because they played the thing as much as I did!

Hmm... Rescue on Fractalus is definetly up there, but as for my favortie game I'd have to say (drum roll please)...

It's a tie!

I honestly couldn't pick between Donkey Kong (400/800) and Xari Arena (5200). Both are awesome games, but they offer something different. Donkey Kong is the daddy of all platform games, but it really shines on the Atari 400 (it's the best home version) and Xari Arena a fast paced twich game which makes me work up a sweat just moving the controller. I think they really represent two of the finest 8-bit games for the Atari.

I like Star Raiders too!

For 2600, River Raid is my best game ever.

For 5200, I'd say a close fight between Ballblazer, Rescue on Fractalus, Joust, Defender, and Berzerk. I'm giving it to Berzerk.

For coin-op, well they were pretty much ALL excellent. Centipede, Asteroids, Star Wars Arcade, Battlezone, and Missile Command come to mind first.
