StanJr #1 Posted October 12, 2001 What's the deal with this game? I remember seeing it in the Parker Bros. catalog along with games like Lord of the Rings and Spider-man and Star Wars ESB. Did a proto ever get made or was this one scrapped? The screenshot in the catalog looked poor. "You won't like me when I'm angry" Stan Banner
Ze_ro #2 Posted October 12, 2001 This question comes up every once in a while it seems... I believe the consensus was that it never really got off the drawing board. No proto has been found to my knowledge. --Zero
StanJr #3 Posted October 12, 2001 Thanks. I would have liked to at least seen the game. I hate it when cool ideas get scrapped after they have been thrown out there. Oh well.... Not-so Incredible Stan
moycon #4 Posted October 12, 2001 How could they even think to advertise a game that wasnt off the drawing board? Id think they would at least want the knowledge that the game was coming along before they advertise. It would be cool to find ANY of the announced PB games...But I'd love for someone to find a proto of Lord of the Rings. Maybe with the movies coming out someone will come forward with one? I can remember as a kid I was soooo excited about that game...I think they bragged it had like 2000+ screens. I also thought I read that when people called PB about the game, they were told that they were sold out of the game at the moment!!
bcprs1 #5 Posted October 12, 2001 I would have loved to have seen LOTR. I also remember being excited about seeing the screenshot and 2000+ screens in the PB catalog. I just don't know how they could have squeezed in that many screens. My only guess would be different color variations or mix and matching the top and bottom half. Who knows??? ratfink #6 Posted October 12, 2001 Wasn't there a "Lord of the Rings" game for the ZX Spectrum? I wonder if the Atari version would have been based on this? The Speccy version is basically just a text adventure but had a similar look to the screen shot in the PB catalog.
Spector #7 Posted October 12, 2001 Hey Green Goblin! Your from Cleveland, yet you know about the Spectrum, and even refer to it as a "Speccy"! How did you find out about it? I thought that Americans only knew about the Commodore 64.
Ze_ro #8 Posted October 12, 2001 I suppose this is the wrong forum to discuss web page suggestions, but since it's applicable to the topic... I think there should be a section for "missing in action" games. This section would have information about each game that never came out, including how for along in development it got, and why it was canned. Hopefully, there would also be links to flyers that show the game, mock screen shots, etc. Since questions about Hulk, McDonalds, and Lord of the Rings come up on such a regular basis, I think it's worth adding this. --Zero
StanJr #9 Posted October 13, 2001 I second Zero's proposition. Alex? Albert? (Note when I do that, I feel like I am asking the gods for something ) It would be really neat to see those things which we could have had, but were denied! moycon #10 Posted October 13, 2001 I dont think its the same game. I had the/a hobbit text adventure for Commodore 64. That just used picture to show your surrounding in each screen. The Atari version didnt have any text. I seems to me I read an article somewhere of someone who actually saw it years ago unfinished. He said most of the screens looked the same, and that creatures would pop up and youd have to "fight" them....He didnt sount too inthralled with it. I'll try to find where I read that. Ze_ro #11 Posted October 13, 2001 Perhaps if knowledge of these is more widely known, there would be a better chance of someone seeing it and thinking "Hey! I have a copy of that game!" For some reason, people seem to have a much easier time finding prototypes of Atari games than prototypes for any other system. It wouldn't surprise me if someone's sitting on a LotR somewhere with no clue as to how much it means to us. --Zero
moycon #12 Posted October 13, 2001 Or the McDonalds for that matter..... Ok no not really. Hey does anyone know if the Sega games based on Paramount movies... 48 hrs, Friday the 13th etc.... Ever got off the drawing board? I saw articles in the video game mags announcing them but never heard a thing after that.
