Blackjack #1 Posted August 11, 2004 I am SOOO pissed about this! I built brand new AMD64 systems for myself and my wife just a couple months ago. I couldn't justify buying 2 copies of Windows XP when I had 98SE lying around for free and the 64 bit version of XP was to be released "very soon". I planned on just waiting for XP64 and buying that. I've also been awaiting the release of Doom 3 for about a century now. Microsoft decides to postpone the release of XP64 til next year while ID decides to not support 98se for Doom3 thereby trying to force me to buy 2 copies of XP in the meantime as well as XP64 when it's released. If I want to play Doom 3 it'll cost me about $250! Well I'm not gonna do it I tell ya!!! I'll just sit here crying about not being able to play Doom until next year and cussing Bill Gates the whole time. They planned this crap to force gamers still using 98se (tens of thousands of us) to upgrade to XP. Although this is kind of a lighthearted rant I honestly do believe ID and MS are in bed together on this. Try to tell me it doesn't sound like a tactic MS would use........... Scumbag, pieces of crap, filthy rich, gotta have a little more, no good, slimy, goatsucking weasels. Your mother was a hamster!!!!!! Whew!!!! Thanks for letting me vent........ I feel better
Avid Fan #2 Posted August 11, 2004 It is a conspiracy. Because it will make people like me give up on PC gaming and buy an X-Box
kheffington #3 Posted August 11, 2004 Well you could download the beta version of AMD64 Windows XP for free from Microsoft and use it until the final version is released next year.
Blackjack #4 Posted August 11, 2004 Well you could download the beta version of AMD64 Windows XP for free from Microsoft and use it until the final version is released next year. Ya know....... that's not a bad idea, I forgot about the trial version completely. I'll have to go visit my sister and use her cable modem though. I was gonna sick my dog on Bill Gates....... you may have just saved him! (thats my boy there on the left, vicious killer aint he)
Mr.FoodMonster #5 Posted August 11, 2004 Well, its really worth it. XP is actually a really good OS, and I dont know why you would 'game' on anything other. Unless the impassible ME that is
Raijin Z #6 Posted August 11, 2004 OMG 64BITTSSSSSS! Seriously, what to you need it for? Because it's new (to Windows)? Early adopters get fucked in the end.

Blackjack #8 Posted August 11, 2004 OMG 64BITTSSSSSS! Seriously, what to you need it for? Because it's new (to Windows)? Early adopters get fucked in the end. Early Adopter? Hehe..... I'm still on 98se I almost always try to wait out the bugs on everything new, but I figured since it's been so long for a new OS and I have 64 bit processors.... why not. And I'm hoping (crosses fingers) that the new buids of Mame32 ..... or Mame64 as the case may be will bring with it some speed boosts for the more recently emulated games. As for the Hex Editor thingy..... sounds a little iffy to me, especially since I've never used one. I figure that's best left to those who understand such things. I'll end up accidentally formatting my hard drives Maybe someone will come out with a Win98 patch for the game. If not..... I've always got my hatred to keep me warm

video game addict #11 Posted August 11, 2004 LOL Funny, I decided to just buy a store model PC after my original pc's HD gave out. My old one was a socket 7 w/ 550mhz very dated, but I ended up buying a P4 machine I think 2400mhz with XP, I changed to classic look and haven't been bothered with it since. Have yet to experience any lockups, BSOD or any probs of the sort. I've been very happy with xp, much better than the old pc with 98.
Avid Fan #12 Posted August 11, 2004 Am I the only person that hates XP? The damn thing only made my computer slow, slow, slow. It seems like you need an Alienware setup to run anything on it properly. Not to mention, my screen always pixelized and blocks the screen so I have to reboot, and my computer isnt that old
IronMongeR #13 Posted August 11, 2004 I've beem using XP for about 2 weeks since I upgraded my computer from a 1.3ghz Duron to a 2.8ghx P4 (also upgraded everything else). I think it's brilliant - so much more stable - haven't had a crash/lock/freeze yet. Couldn't recommend it enough.
Blackjack #14 Posted August 11, 2004 Avid Fan - No you're not the only one who hates XP, from what I've seen of it I prefer my 98se. I'm always amazed how much everyone complains about 98. My systems have always been wonderfully stable and fast ....... that is since I started building my own with premium components instead of using mass market computers....... I'm guessing it's not Win98 thats the problem, it's everones Compaqs, Dells, Gateways, and eMachines using poor quality components.
HawgWyld #15 Posted August 11, 2004 Well, here's another fan of 98SE (well, as much of a fan as I can be of a Microsoft OS). Why? It's the first OS I've had from Microsoft that actually worked worth a damn. My system stays pretty stable most of the time, and that wasn't true under Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or Windows 98. So, if one in five operating systems from Microsoft has actually worked for me, why would I risk giving it up for yet another OS from Microsoft? Windows XP may be all wonderful, but my system works just fine now under 98SE and I'm not going to mess with it.
Adrian M #16 Posted August 11, 2004 Am I the only person that hates XP? The damn thing only made my computer slow, slow, slow. It seems like you need an Alienware setup to run anything on it properly. Not to mention, my screen always pixelized and blocks the screen so I have to reboot, and my computer isnt that old XP has been literally perfect for me. It's much faster (games run better, startup, shutdown times are faster) and better still, it just plain works! And that, friends, is how it ought to be! Raijin Z #17 Posted August 11, 2004 If you want to split the difference, get Win2K. It's just about everything good from XP, minus the bullshit, and just about everything good from 9X, minus the instability.
FireTiger #18 Posted August 11, 2004 I hate XP... I just do... Next PC upgrade I'm going Linux...I liked DOS,,,I have DOS games (still) ....now to find an external 5.24 inch 2D floppy disk drive ...so meny old games....
Jess Ragan #19 Posted August 11, 2004 Doom 3 is just a flaming pile of bloatware. Surely there has to be other games that you could play instead... how about Far Cry? It looks great AND you won't have to buy a Cray supercomputer to play it. JR
Gregory DG #20 Posted August 11, 2004 I just upgraded to XP the other day (got a free copy for my work ). From what I can tell, XP is faster at booting, but does crash more often than Windows 2000. I'm sure it's fine as long as you only Microsoft programs. But try using some third party stuff and expect lock-ups.
Jess Ragan #21 Posted August 11, 2004 My personal gripe with Windows XP is that you have to activate the software when you first purchase it, then after you've replaced four (six with Professional) pieces of hardware in your machine. Big Brother Bill doesn't need to know what I'm doing with my computer at all times. For that reason, I'd rather have Windows 2000. It's the same architecture, without Bill's invasion of privacy or his lame-o animal assistants. JR
Drakonic Duke #22 Posted August 11, 2004 Ever since I got XP my computers been weeding out games it thinks is too old and out of date. I can't play a lot of my old games.

Avid Fan #25 Posted August 12, 2004 I'll give you that Adrian, my computer does start up and shut off 10X faster at least. The old OS used to hang there forever on Shut Down, and it wouldn't even do that sometimes (it once stayed there for 12 hours before I restarted it
