"Skate Or Die" theme song

Recommended Posts

Sorry for posting such an esoteric question, but you guys have amazed me with your knowledge many times before, so here goes:

I am interested in doing a remix of Rob Hubbard's opening theme for the C64/NES game "Skate Or Die." I have downloaded SIDPlay, which allows me to hear the original C64 theme just like the original, and I have a couple of MP3 remixes of the song, thanks to remix.kwed.org. What I'd like to know is, does a program exist which can deconstruct the SID file to separate the sample section from the program section?

I.e., I have already been able to figure out the tune and program it in MIDI format by ear, but what it lacks is that unique guitar sound that is provided by the sample included in the Commodore's SID file. I'm wanting to know if any utility is out there which could let me extract that guitar sound into a WAV or AIFF file so that I could make a VST out of it for use in Cubase, Nuendo or Logic Platinum? Thanks for reading, and thanks very much in advance for any help...

Have a look around for a program called SID2MIDI. A lot of composers I believe have used it to deconstruct SIDs into proper pitch and length compositions for remixes. At least you can then check to see if your composition by ear is correct or not ;)

Can't help with the sample part however, it would probably need a good look at Rob's music player routine to determine that. Note though that the speed of the music in the game is actually wrong, the speed as per the SID in Sidplay (and I hope you're using Sidplay 2/w here!) is correct.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I actually had already tried converting the SID to a MIDI using that utility, but evidently the defauly MIDI instruments don't match the sampled instruments in the SID file well, because what resulted was almost unrecognizeable. I'm going to try some other SID players to see if I can find one that allows you to mute individual instruments, but the one I'm using now is the only one I could get to load the "Skate Or Die" SID I have without an error. But good information -- thanks again!

I have nothing helpful to say...just GREAT CHOICE.

My single fav bit of C=64 music--this is the titlescreen, right, with all the cool percussion?

What a A/V tour de force that game was...those 3D models of the skaters...I thought it was Amiga-level, seriously. The NES version pales in comparison.

did you get it from hvsc?

These files are supposed to be "standard"

I got the SID file from a site called remx.kwed.org, which features MP3 remixes of C64 tunes. But for some reason, I couldn't get that file to load in SIDPlay, so I found another copy that was labeled as a "PSID" file. I don't know what that means.

With the newest version of SIDPlay for Windows, I can load load both files (which sound identical) but I still haven't found a player that can isolate the guitar track to allow me to sample the instrument. There are over a dozen Windows-based SID players out there, so if anyone knows of one that can isolate the three voices that SID provides, please let me know.

I wouldn't be pursuing a project like this if I weren't totally impressed by Rob Hubbard's original tune. I think it kicks a large amount of ass. I hope that I can finally produce a listenable remix, whether or not I can sample the original guitar. I have plenty of guitars, amps and effects that I could use to create my own electric sample, but the C64 SID has a great sound as is, so I'd like to have that, if only for a reference. Thanks for all your help -- it's much appreciated!!!

You need to try and find the v1 of SIDplay then if you can... that allowed you to mute each channel, but won't support the later versions of SID files now available at HVSC.

For favorite music I have to give it to either Times of Lore or Turbo Outrun. Skate or Die is a great game though :)
