PSto DC adapters

Recommended Posts

Have any of you ever used the adapters for using PS controllers on a DC? My Pelican Real Arcade controller has hookups for PS, GC and Xbox. I use it for my GC, but I was thinking it would be cool to use it on the DC too. Obviously, I need an adpater to do that but I don't know how good or bad the adpaters work. Anybody ever use these things?

Yes, it can be done. In fact, I prefer to play Hydro Thunder with a Playstation controller... the analog thumbstick is more comfortable and offers more precise control than the one on the standard Dreamcast pad.

Right now, Red Octane is sold out of Dreamcast controller converters. Your best hope is jumping on eBay to find what's called a Dream Connection... it's a controller converter that offers compatibility with both Playstation and Saturn joypads, as well as PS/2 keyboards.

I have one from Mad Catz and the only problem I've ever had with it is that NesterDC resets when I have it plugged it. Every other game I've used it with as been fine for PS controllers, Saturn controllers, and keyboards.

Have you tried checking on www.liksang.com?

Yeah, that's where I first saw them. I was hesitant to buy any though without hearing how they were first. A friend of mine bought a USB PS2 controller adapter for his Mac and it sucks really bad. There's a noticible lag between pressing anything on the controller and it happening on screen. If that was the case with these, I wouldn't bother.

I have no complaints about my Dream Connection. Well, just one... it has no slots for memory cards or VMU units. They fixed that problem with later designs of the adapter, and even if you can't get one of those, it's not that big a deal... just keep another controller plugged in elsewhere. Most newer Dreamcast games will hunt for memory cards plugged into other controller ports.

As for the issue of response time, well, it's not an issue. I think games play brilliantly with the Dream Connection, and I prefer using it to the standard Dreamcast controller. I say you really ought to buy one. The only thing you have to lose is hand cramps from using the crappy stock controller.

I actually like the DC controller for 95% of my games but I like the arcade stick for the Atari collection and fighting games. I don't plan on using a stock PS controller at all, I don't really like them.

Just wondering if these adapters allow any kind of button mapping. I'd love to be able to play some of the FPS on the dc and map the buttons that control looking to the second thumbstick of the PS controller so I can actually shoot something.

I used to have the same real arcade controller that you're talking about and it is incompatible with the PS to DC adapters. There is something about how it is made such that this is so. When I found this out, I returned mine (I didn't care for it very much anyway). Your best bet would be to hack a PS pad to real arcade controls and then use an adapter for DC (it will definitely work). Another option would be to go with the X-Arcade controller and their DC adapter.

Hmmm. So the Real arcade didn't work in Digital or analog modes?

Ive been using an adapter called total control Plus. This work just fine and has a switch for each kind of different device like, gun, stick, steering wheel etc.

Nice to be back after getting banned from the net at work :)

I couldn't get it to work in either mode, it just wouldn't respond to any button presses correctly, maybe it was my adapters.
