Activision Space Shuttle (2600 cart)

I've been searching around and read that I could just use the backup engines instead of the primaries since there's no color/bw switch. However, I'm not getting that to work? I can play the game if I hold down the "Pause" button all the time, but that gets old real quick What am I missing here?

Nothing far as I know. Because I have managed to play 2600 shuttle several times using the backup engines. As I recall, if you read the recent thread about the accuracy of shuttle, someone even managed to land that puppy using just the small OHMs engine burns to slow down enough.

 

I know it is possible. You just have to make sure that everything else is done correctly before hand? Been a long time since I played it, but I know that the backups can be used. I only played shuttle using a 7800 and have never had the primary engines avail.

Problem is that with the "pause" button in the normal position, the primaries are "on". I can't get the countdown to start that way. I have to hold the pause button down (primary engine off) in order to get rid of the launch error code (4 I think?). Once I do that, I'm kinda stuck...
