nadir #1 Posted August 17, 2004 I sold my Genesis ages ago, but I had used the controllers with my 2600 and found them to work "OK" (other than joysticks are way better than those dumb button pads). Is the 7800 "2nd button" available on the Sega pads? (my last 7800 controller just broke in a non-repairable way).
jsoper #2 Posted August 17, 2004 Only if you build an adapter circuit that's in the 2600 FAQ.
SteveW #3 Posted August 17, 2004 No, the Genesis buttons won't work as the Atari 7800's ProStick's second button. Besides, you don't want to use an unaltered Sega gamepad in a 7800. I've heard that there's the possibility of burning out the chips that regulate the input/output from the controllers. That's a good way to burn out your 7800 motherboard. You need to take the Sega pad apart and rewire it properly. Someone here should be able to provide a link to a technical file that should show you how to do it. The only screwy thing about using a genesis pad is that pin 5 (a paddle input that sits at 5v) powers the controller. I never heard of this being an issue, maybe if you're playing a paddle game, but you shouldn't do that anyway. The C64 is something you never want to plug a gen controller into however. ninjarabbit #5 Posted August 18, 2004 Interesting, I use a Genesis controller on my 7800 to play 2600 games and have had no problems, I even use it to play 7800 Joust and Ms. Pac Man.
Coleco Kong #6 Posted August 18, 2004 I had an Ascii Ware 6 pad joystick for Genesis and I just hooked it up with Ms. Pac-Man, Mario Bros. Donkey Kong Junior, and Xevious...and it worked like a charm..no problems at all, even works fine with 2600 games
hanglyman #7 Posted August 24, 2004 Genesis controllers never hurt my 7800, I'm pretty sure you're safe. I like the old big ones, not for all games though. Some games are just best with a good ol basic 2600 stick.
