Skatepunk60 #1 Posted October 15, 2001 WHY IS ATARI COLLECTING more addicting than crack? I lost my job a month ago and im still buying I dont know why? I sold my freakin car for money and now engoy the simple things: my band playing outside of stores for money and doing skateboard dares for money and i STILL bought 100$ worth of games this ever happen to any of you? And one more question what are your occupations i used to work as a stockperson , regiser jockey and closer at a liquer store and was wondering what the rest of you did for a living? AlanD #2 Posted October 15, 2001 I can't argue with you about it being addicting. I have over 3500 games at the moment and I'm about to make an 8 hour drive to the NAVA meeting so I can add more to my collection. I've been in the Navy for the past 11 years. I am a Gas Turbine Systems (Electrical) Chief Petty Officer. Long title meaning I tell people how to make jet engines work. AlanD
StanJr #3 Posted October 16, 2001 Video games are stupid addictive, mostly because its tubs of fun to play them and collect them. I'm totally bitten by the video game bug. As for the occupation: I am an Education Specialist. I work with elementary and junior high school kids. (I try to limit the amount of my salary that goes to video games and comic books, but I am losing the battle. ) Before that I was a professional chef, and before that I had many, many other "joe jobs." Stan of all trades.
Skatepunk60 #4 Posted October 16, 2001 Joe Jobs? Is that a crack?
StanJr #5 Posted October 16, 2001 not at all. everybody has "joe jobs", they're just the stepping stone jobs you take during high school, college, what have you, to pay the rent, buy the pizza, and buy the video games. You don't take them very seriously and you are always looking for something that pays more for less work. You know, "joe jobs." Only way I see that as a crack is if your name happens to be Joe. Far as I know, your name is skatepunk60. If it also happens to be joe, then ooops! Maybe we should call 'em "stan jobs!"
Ze_ro #6 Posted October 16, 2001 Well, I'm deeply entrenched at university at the present, so I don't have time for a "real" job. As it is, I work at the stadium and arena here in Winnipeg. For football games, I run one of the concession booths, and for hockey games, I work in club seating. I also get to work other events such as concerts, socials (there's a banquet hall in the stadium), and other such stuff. In university though, I'm majoring in electrical engineering, and I have two more years ahead of me (including this one) before I can actually go out and get a real job. Once I'm making engineer pay, and living the life of Dilbert, at least I'll get to come home to my Vectrex, Chase the Chuckwagon, and other such niceties. Of course, this doesn't lead to much money... and a lot of it ends up going into video games. I'm a lot more frugal than you guys when it comes to video games though. I haven't bought anything on eBay in months due to lack of funds, and I'm hard-pressed to spend more than a buck or two on a game in the wild... but I still manage to make my finds and build my collection. --Zero
AtariDude #7 Posted October 16, 2001 The reason that we enjoy purchasing games even when we are not making a great deal of money is the fact that purchasing an item (any item not necessarily say an Atari game) is a way to reward ourselves, even if only modestly. If anyone ever needs to be rewarded, it is ourselves for all the hard work and effort we put into other aspects of our lives. Buying an Atari cartridge and then spending some time playing it over and over allows me to get rid of some stress and frustration at certain aspects of life that are beyond any one's control. They allow me to relive, even if only for a short time, a part of my life when things were simplier and demands made of my time were not as severe as they are now. So don't stress out over it. Just try to keep it within perspective. If something you can purchase can bring you a few moments of joy, then the cost is well worth it. Enjoy the games! Malix #12 Posted October 17, 2001 Stan My RN is Joe so you have offended me. Just kidding man. Well put AtariDude, we all need a little something for ourselves every once in awhile and I think Atari fits into this niche nicely.(especially in bad times, like beign jobless) As far as careers go, I have had many "Joe Jobs" but have settled in as a financial planner.
