I checked the bid history, it was the seller that cancelled the bid.

Okay, I'm confused. I too checked the bid history. Not only do I not see a $1,000 bid (I see a $36.00 retracted bid) I don't get how you figured out that the seller canceled the bid.

I was looking at atari auctions and that was at $10000. The only way I knew it was at a $10000 I went to see what great game i had missed someway, and poof, it was back down to $ 37

I have a feeling it might have been a bug in eBay's system. It's not exactly foolproof. There have been many times when I've checked up a price and on the next page it's changed.

You have to remember as well that for a bid to reach $1000, two bidders will need to have been prepared to pay that much. Even if you set a maximum bid of $1000, your actual bid will only be as high as what others have bidded ... so if someone comes in with a bid of $36, eBay's system will automatically increase your bid to $37

It's something a lot of people don't seem to have grasped. Whenever I see something I want, I will only put on what I can afford at the time or what I'm prepared to pay as my maximum bid. I refuse to get involved in a last-minute bidding war. If people keep pushing my bid up then it's frustrating, but not as frustrating as going toe-to-toe with someone else over the last minute of an auction only to find you've lost the auction because your internet connection decided to burp at the wrong moment.

On the other hand, if someone else finally goes over my maximum bid then I say ... "fine. You're welcome to it."

As a seller, though, it's fascinating to watch your items increase in value fourfold over the last couple of minutes of an auction.
