How much of your life do you spend on games?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just curious to see what others do with/for their game time. I have been tracking how much time I spend on this a week, and its about 20 hours between collecting, fixing and playing. This is also time spent on the full size games, nonetheless, a good bit spent on consoles.

I am in Grad school, teaching full time, and just moved in with my fiancee. She understands this, but I am imagining not all ladies do.

Reply if you like.

I have been very lucky in life. Both of my parents love video and computer games. Back in '79 when I got my first 2600, my parents bought me 10 or so games to go along with it. My dad loved games like Maze Craze, Video Pinball, Trick Shot and Ms Pac-Man. My mom loved games like Space Invaders, Adventure, and Circus Atari. When I got my Coleco and C-64, it was pretty much the same. Often, one of them would come home with a new game...or one copied/borrowed from a friend.

When I met my wife, I found out on the first day of talking to her that she loves video/computer games. In fact, she is probably a bigger fan of video games than I am. She goes to garage/yard sales and flea markets and is always coming home with either another system, or a box of games. I am the PC game collector and she is the console game collector. And now, my kids are gamers. My son just turned 4 and has made it quite a ways in Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. A few weeks ago, I was at the PX here on base and a kid who had to have been about 8 or 9 was playing the demo N64, and was having trouble playing Mario 64. My son said "Here, let me show you how to play" and took the controller. The kid was standing there with his mouth open, watching my son play the game like it was second nature. LOL

Anyways, I don't keep track of the time I spend playing games. Most days I am doing various projects for people (for profit), so I am pretty much always online. I do video and photo editing. I do photography. I do photo printing. I take videos that people give me and turn them into VCD's to play in DVD players. And in between, I forage the internet, browse the message boards, and play an occasional game.

When I can find the time, I spend about two hours on the message borads, playing games, and working on programming per night (usually less cause I'm so busy). Occasionally, I'll find extra time, especially when I get a new game (like yesterday I got Castlevania Chronicles for PSX and today or tomorrow Spider-man 2 comes out, so there goes my weekend!)

I guess I spend an average of 10 hours a week plus whatever weekend time I can spend, maybe a total of 15 hours a week.

I try to be balanced in everything I do. When I spend too much time playing / making / talking about videogames , other aspects of my life suffer.

But still, a big chunk of my spare time during my life has been spent holding joysticks and gamepads.

A girl that I've been close to for a while now is sort of into video games... she only really plays Tetris, Dr. Mario, and Super Mario World... but she's amazing at all three of them. I'd like to try to get her interested in other games, but once she gets interested, she'll probably kick my butt every time!

As for how much time I spend on this hobby... it's probably too much. Hell, I spend at least half an hour just reading this message board (And I read it maybe twice a night). Hell, I have a midterm in solid state electronics tomorrow that I really should be studying, but I'll probably end up spending more time tonight on video games than studying... Oh well, I've gotten through 3 years of university like this so far

You mean we are supposed to be doing other things besides playing games?

Anyway, I spend about 2 hours a day either checking out the message boards here, playing different games on the itsyourturn.com game site, or playing with my new Atari Lynx or PS2.
