AncillaryDrone #1 Posted August 23, 2004 Anybody else besides me trying to torrent the whole set? I'm wondering if it's just a waste of time, seems like too much data to torrent. I think I might be able to at least get DVD #5. I got up to 70% on DVD #7 but it hasnt moved for almost 16 hours.
NE146 #2 Posted August 23, 2004 Hey I just got a full mame 85 set. First time I got a full set since mame 65(?). I didn't use Torrents though, I snagged them off of Usenet on alt.binaries.emulators.mame. It took me about 2 weeks to catch the relevant floods. The only thing I'm missing is the CHD files but I don't really want them Since I can't play those games anyway on my pc and they're way too big for such a few games. I can get them anytime I want anyway.. p.s. Mame 86 was just released
AncillaryDrone #3 Posted August 23, 2004 LOL yeah I just noticed that .86 was released. I've used the newsgroups before but I always had to pay for it. I decided to try to get em for free this time. I use SBC cable internet but I've never figured out if they have an NNTP portal or not. Any suggestions on getting some NNTP action going would be appreciated. I've heard eDonkey is good for ROM's but I've never tried that before. The DVD's include the CHD files, that's probably a whole DVD right there. Don't bother with SBC's news server. 1) it sucks due to lack of completion and 2) it sucks more because they don't carry alt.binaries.{multimedia|sounds|warez}.* My current choice is newsreader.com (current offer is $10/mo for 30 gigs) for bulk downloads, and a second level Giganews account ($12/mo?) for retention. (My newsreader acct has $10/mo for 50 gigs, and my GN account usually rolls over with lots left over.) Giganews now has an offer of unlimited download for $25/mo. AncillaryDrone #6 Posted August 24, 2004 Here's the problem with torrenting the DVD set: The original seeder hasnt sent the entire file to anyone yet. The worst case is DVD #1 where it looks like 1 seeder is feeding 300 leechers. It has taken, I believe, three weeks for DVD #1 to get to about 50%. If everyone would drop off and let a few people complete, then more hop on, etc, it would go much better. It's too hard to coordinate something like that, also it's on a warez/movie tracker that's feeding who knows how many websites (I originally saw it on torrentreactor.net). Maybe if I wait a couple more weeks it will be moving along better.
Bruce Tomlin #7 Posted August 24, 2004 Are the DVDs of individual files, or it is one big mass of files in a few RAR archives? Because if the torrents are of files as you'd download them from usenet, you can just drop them in (stop your torrent first) and let BT figure out whether they're right or not. More than a few times, I've taken a bunch of old damaged files (one even had a CD-ROM read error near the end, so I just copied what I could) and run them in a new torrent. It's nice to start your download at 80% or more.
NE146 #8 Posted August 24, 2004 Nice page that compares usenet news group servers by speed, retention, and completion: http://www.newsgroupservers.net/ But I'd just say for newsgroup servers check out : www.giganews.com <----> www.easynews.com www.usenetserver.com <----> www.ultrafeed.com www.nntpservers.com <----> www.buzzardnews.com http://news.astraweb.com <----> www.100proofnews.com www.teranews.com <----> www.bubbanews.com www.newshosting.com <----> www.forteinc.com Take it from there young jedi

I have what I thought was the complete 0.84 ROMs on 4 DVDs. Certainly they seem to audit correctly with Romcenter.
Major_Havoc #10 Posted August 24, 2004 What are the CHD files, anyway? http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mamechd.htm They are usually very large. And for the most part run too slowly (at least on my pc ) to be playable.
AncillaryDrone #11 Posted August 25, 2004 Thanks NE146. And Bruce, the files I'm downloading are Nero DVD images, what's inside the images I'm not sure, I'm assuming it is a bunch of ROM zips and whatnot. Watch it be a bunch of porno movies.
